An incomplete iron bevelled key hole type horseshoe of post-medieval date, (1550-1880). The object is a typical U-shape in plan with a keyhole profile in the centre and is almost complete. The calkins are rounded and worn. The number and location of the nail holes cannot be determined due to corrosion. This horse shoe is very similar to one on page 41 of Bailey, G. 1997. Detector finds 3. Greenlight (Witham, Essex). The length is 155mm and the width is 128mm.

A Post-Medieval horseshoe dating 1600 to 1700AD. The horshoe is a worn and corroded keyhole type horseshoe with equal branches and the heels inclined. Due to corrosion deposits no nail holes are evident and is probably a draught shoe. The length is 135mm, the width is 143mm.

Iron horseshoe. This is heavily corroded but the inner arch shape can be discerned, and there is the suggestion of two rectangular holes in the front of the shoe. The pointed branch is also apparent. It is likely to be a Guildhall transitional type, dated to AD 1500-50 (Sparkes 1976, 13).

Possible corrective shoe often called a bar shoe or a shoe for an ox. The bar shoe was used to correct the horses gait as this can be significantly affected by the shape, weight, and thickness of the horseshoe. Farriers trained in hot shoeing made custom shoes to help horses with bone or musculature problems in their legs. Difficult to date probably somewhere between the medieval to post-medieval 1400-1700AD. The circular horseshoe was used to give extra support at the heel the nail holes for the shoe to be attached to the horses hoof are rectangular in shape and taper inwards in profi…

Iron horse shoe, dating to the medieval period, circa 11th - 12th century. The shoe is heavily eroded with three round (long lopped) shaped holes either side. The shape of the shoe is lobate with wavy edges. At the end of the horseshoe which is u shaped is square. Some of the pins are still visible on one side, they are rectangular in section. This is type 2 (pers.comm J.Clark).

An iron horseshoe (in two pieces) of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1250 - 1600. It is of Clark type 4 (Clark, 2004, The Medieval Horse and its Equipment). It has a fairly narrow inner profile and no obvious calkins. The shoe has three nail holes on one side and four on the other with six rectangular headed nails extant or partially extant, each standing proud of the shoe. The horseshoe is sub-rectangular in section, being convex on the ground surface and flat on the foot surface. The web measures 31.6mm at its widest point and narrows down to 22mm at one heel, and …

An incomplete wrought iron horseshoe of later medieval date. It has a rounded outer edge and an inner profile resembling a pointed arch. The artefact is highly corroded but generally survives well. The length is 115mm, the width is 117mm and the weight 126.32g. The style and size suggest a draught shoe and probably a dove shoe of circa 14th to late 15th century.

This 'later medieval' form can be found illustrated in Clark (1986, 3; fig. 8).

A heavy iron horseshoe of probably medieval origin. It has an arched shaped centre with roughly vertical sides, and the arch is not pointed, which indicates a sixteenth century date. The outside is a more rounded shape. It is not possible to tell if calkins are present, but possibly not. In spite of the heavy corrosion two or three square holes are visible around the perimeter.
Similar to the Dove show shown on page 15 of Sparkes' Shire Guide to Horseshoes. The dimensions are in accordance with a draught horse shoe of the period

An iron horseshoe of uncertain age. It is asymmetric, one branch is pointed and one ends in a wide, blunt end. The central shape is a pointed arch.It is too corroded to identify the number of holes present. It has some of the characteristic shape of a thirteenth century Dove shoe, but it could also date from the eighteenth century, the level of corrosions may suggest an earlier date
Dimensions: 130mm long and 120mm wide approximately, it weight 239g

A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total, the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this.
