Object type: AXE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast blade of an iron axe, the socket end is missing from an old break and the blade is highly corroded. It is rectangular in cross section and triangular in plan. It is quite a small axe and very thick, 22.34mm. Axes do not change a great deal between the Roman and Modern periods and features that can suggest more precise dating, such as the socket shape and the way the blade joins the socket, are missing in this example.

The size suggests that it was intended to be fired from a demi-culverin, a medium cannon in use during the late 16th and 17th century. Other options might be that it is a ball from a ball mill for crushing minerals or a foreign cannon ball of unidentified type. Blackmore, H. L. 1976. The Armouries of the Tower of London. An iron token or weight which has possibly been converted to a gaming piece. If formerly a weight it would approximate to 1/2 ounce, but account must be taken of metal lost through corrosion. It is badly corroded but on both sides a symbol has been scratched into the surface post manufacture, which consists of two triangles joined in line with each other at the point. Rust is evident on both faces Dimensions: It is diameter 28.4mm and 2.48mm thick, it weighs 12.5g

An medieval wrought iron arrowhead dating from c. the 11th-15th century. It has a rounded socket instead of a tang and the blade is a long triangular shape. The blade seems to be flat though the corrosion could be obscuring details. The arrowhead has barbs which appear to be straight not curved, but one is missing and the other is broken so the shape is not certain. There is some damage to one side of the blade and to the socket, which is c. 9mm thick in diameter. The iron is corroded but seems to be stable. Arrowheads are notoriously difficult to date. Possible corrective shoe often called a bar shoe or a shoe for an ox. The bar shoe was used to correct the horses gait as this can be significantly affected by the shape, weight, and thickness of the horseshoe. Farriers trained in hot shoeing made custom shoes to help horses with bone or musculature problems in their legs. Difficult to date probably somewhere between the medieval to post-medieval 1400-1700AD. The circular horseshoe was used to give extra support at the heel the nail holes for the shoe to be attached to the horses hoof are rectangular in shape and taper inwards in profi…

Near the open end is one rivet hole which bore the rivet that helped keeping the chape on the sheath.

Iron axehead, possibly Late Iron Age but more likely Post-Medieval or modern. If it did date from the LIA, it would be a very rare Lancashire find indeed. The object is heavily corroded, but the socket and blade are still readily recognisable. Early Iron Age axes were made from forged, not wrought iron and it was difficult to form whole 'sockets' as were known from LBA socketed axes. For iron axes like this the wings needed to be reheated and hammered into the required shape. However, iron axes like this survive only very rarely and since post medieval and some modern tools apply this …
