Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy spectacle buckle. Medieval to Early Post-Medieval in date. Plain with no decoration. This example is fairly crudely finished. Strap bar is in tact and slightly recessed from the edge of the frame.
Due to their continued use and abundance from the mid 14th to late 17th centuries these buckles can be hard to date out of context (Whitehead 2003 page 52).

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published
Free-standing steelyard weight. It has a square base and instead of an integral iron or bronze hook. It has been pierced just below the top. Through this hole a hook would have been passed in order to suspend it from the steelyard.
Lead weights are generally difficult to date. Official weights of the medieval or post-medieval period would have carried a maker's or other kind of official mark. Many of the unoffical and home-made weights that were also in circulation were plain and in most cases, even the shape does not tell us much about their origin or time of use.

Cast copper-alloy hooked belt fastener. It is a S- or serpent-shaped specimen with a snake-head at either end. In the centre, between the two necks/heads is a band and a collar of leaves on either side.
Terminals in the shape of a snake's head are most common, but seeing that the two terminals of this one resemble a duck or swan's head more than that of a snake it can be assumed that heads of other animals may have been displayed as well.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

This object may be a coin(?) weight, possibly of Oriental origin. It is the size of a medieval/post med. square coin weight and made from a reddish copper-alloy. Originally, it was probably square or rectangular, but the corners are smoothed down and the edges and surfaces are extremely worn. It appears, however, that the surfaces were decorated or inscribed with Arabic letters, possibly in a very ornate style, with dots and additional wavy lines between the letters.

Copper-alloy swivel with oval loop. The loop has an integral rivet- or nail-shaped bolt with a wide head with a bevelled edge. The junction between this and the loop is marked by two dragon or horse heads with finely grooved teeth, eyes and nostrils.
The complete swivel would have had two loops which were joined at the 'rivet-shaped' part. This would allow free movement for the strap and would prevent it from becoming tangled. It is likely that this kind of strap junction was used in dogs' leashes and falconry during the earlier part of the medieval period.

I have examined a group of 11 coins and fragments of coins the coins are listed in detail in the accompanying catalogue. All the coins are silver and all but two fragments are official coins of the medieval kings of England, and will thus be of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92.5 fine metal. The remaining two fragments appear to come from one coin, a sterling imitation of English pennies issued by the French lord Gaucher de Chatillon. These will have a silver fineness of c. 80%.
Although the group is relatively small, it represents most of the silver denominations of lat…

Cast cu-alloy pommel piece dating from the medieval period, i.e. from c. AD1250-1500. It is circular in shape with a vertical perforation through the centre which would have received flat, thin terminal of the hilt plate and kept the hilt in place. It would have also acted as a counter-balance to the weight of the blade. The pommel is a 'wheel-shaped' pommel of Type VIII (see reference below). These pommels are common in the 13th/14th century and bigger examples are known to have come off swords. The smaller size of this example, however, suggests that it was a dagger- rather than a sw…

Cast lead-alloy token dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. 1500-1800. The token is only decorated on the obverse; the reverse is plain. Furthermore, it appears that the token still carries remains of its casting strips which means that it was never finished off and probably never entered circulation.

Medieval cast lead alloy, or lead, weight, biconical with a different decorative pattern on each face. The weight has a circular perforation through the centre. It has a maximum external diameter of 31mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 9mm. The weight appears to have seen very little use as there are few signs of wear. One side of the weight is decorated with raised, almost random, intersecting lines that look like a series of 'A's running around the central hole. The other side has two concentric bands of closely packed, sloped radiating lines, and there ad und…

The sides of the neck converge at an angle to the lower chamber which has an opening width of 25mm. One side is convex and styled as a scallop shell. The reverse is flat with bevelled sides to the neck. There appears to be a vertically divided shield cast into this face. The lead has been lost fro…

A lead alloy, cast, probable net weight or net sinker of Age uncertain. It is oval in plan, an elongated hexagon in section and has a circular hole running through its length. The casting seams along the sides have been trimmed. Another hole in the centre of one side is probably a casting flaw. There is no decoration. The metal has a smooth yellow patina. It was probably used as a fishing weight or more likely a net weight for catching game. Compare KENT-ADB2C7 which cites Detector Finds 2, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publishing 1993, page 29-34 No. 58, and more crude examples such as S…
