Cast copper-alloy single looped buckle plate dating to the medieval period (c. 1250-1400). Three small rivets (one of which remains in place) were used for attachment of the leather strap. The plate is small and less than a mm thick; while the reverse is plain, the obverse is sparsely decorated with a zigzaggy line following the outline of the plate. Shiny residue on the surface suggests that the plate was once silvered or gilt.

Copper alloy Buckle perhaps dating to the 15th century AD. The frame is curved with 6 quarter circle toothed rabbets running along the whole outer edge of each loop and a transverse grooved decoration on the outer edge of each loop. The buckle has a Bifid knop at either end of the strap bar which is missing, set back from the frame. During the 15th century rectangular buckles were manufactured which had highly curved frames. This suggests a specialised function most likely to be used for securing armour. A similar example can be found in Whitehead, R. 2003. Buckles 1250-1800. Greenlan…

The buckle is cast with a floral decoration perhaps used to fasten a waist belt or for a sword belt. This example probably dates from.1550 to 1650 AD. The length is 36mm and the width 35mm.

This buckle belongs to a small group of buckles dating mainly to the period 1350-1450AD, the number of types within this group is fairly limited. They are thought to have been used to secure sword or dagger belts but some have been found from excavations which are still attached to waist girdles. The length is 24mm, the width is 25mm, thickness 2mm and the weight is 1.67g. The length of the pin fragments are 8mm and 2mm respectively.

Single loop ring buckle. The frame has a slightly irregular thickness around which the blunt pin can move freely. This buckle would probably have been used to secure belts at the waist or thigh and had no buckle plate because the bunching of material around the frame gives the end of the strap extra strength. This item may, however, be an annular brooch.

Cast cu-alloy buckle frame (missing) with integral plate dating from c. AD1200-1300. The buckle would have been of oval shape, but it broke off from around the plate; the pin is missing, too. The reverse of the remaining plate is plain, but the obverse is slightly bevelled and decorated with parallel grooves. Two small rivets are still in place and the perforation closest to what is left of the frame would have held the pin. The plate was probably attached to a leather strap or belt.
