An image of the fragment of mail has been analysed by Paul Thompson, Museum Archaeology Officer, Coventry, and his verdict is: Its round section, riveted mail with two failed links. Rather than square section or butted links which were often used for repairs although re-enactors use them to make complete garments. Its made in a pattern known as barley corn where one link joins to four other links, two above and two below, never to another link in the same row. This is easier to see on a larger piece and is the standard way of producing mail. It could have originated from almost any…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a pattern of dots and lines in relief. The lines divide each ring-shaped surface in ca. ten crudely designed but equally-sized cells, five of which show a central design of an 'arrow' or 'heart', while the remaining five cells show two dots set above each other vertically. The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or t…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is very crudely decorated on both sides: while one side shows a crude pattern of criss-crossing lines in relief, the other shows at least one circle of dots around the central perforation. Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a simple ring-and-dot motif: however, whilst there are six ring-and-dots on one side, the other shows only four. The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or to weigh down cloth (table cloths, curtains, etc). Similar items found in archaeological contexts have been dated to ca. AD1400-1600.

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other. The decoration on both sides is very similar. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

Carved stone head found by a gardener on the grounds of Clitheroe Castle. The head is quite small and incomplete. It probably displays a gargoyle, ape-like monster or bat. It has big ears and protruding eyes suggesting that both needed to be seen from far below. The snout is missing, but most of the fan-shaped crest is still intact. It does not appear to have been cut completely symmetrical; maybe it was meant to display a creature in motion or movement? A flat reverse and a hole suggest that it was propped up or attached with/to an iron bar. Furthermore, there are remains of concrete …

This is a net sinker of local sandstone. It was found n the banks of the Lune near Overton and was probably used in seine or whammal net fishing. Net sinkers weighed down the bottom (groundrope) of the net which was buoyed up by floats at the top. Fish were then caught in the net between. A channel has been worn in the stone where the sinker has been tied to the groundrope (this is where the modern rope is attached today). It is difficult to date this object, but many of them, found on rivers across the country, are associated with the medieval fishing industry. They were replaced by l…

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…

Small wall sherd, very worn, probably from a medieval cooking pot dating from the 11th to 14th century. The vessel was made from dark grey or black eartheware and coated with a thick light-grey slip. There are only smaller and medium-size inclusions (quartzine and possibly organic). The outside looks sponged and seems to have displayed a very basic, rough decoration. It may have come an eartheware casserole dish for making broths or stews.
