This hoard, which consists of fifty radiate coins, was found by a metal-detectorist in 2009; although the coins were spread over a small area, there is little doubt from the homogeneity of their dates, types and physical condition that they did indeed constitute a hoard. There was no sign of any kind of container. On a preliminary examination, the coins ranged in date from the reign of Victorinus to that of Allectus; as such it is the only hoard from north-west England to terminate with coins of that Emperor, and only the second (I think!) from anywhere in northern Britain. Roman copper alloy barbarous radiate contemporary copy of Claudius II dating to the period AD 268 to c270 (Reece Period 13). The reverse shows the 'goddess' Providentia leaning on a column and holding a baton in her left hand with a cornucopiae in the right. The diameter is 18mm. The obverse inscription is IMP C CLAVDIVS [AVG], and the reverse inscription is PROVIDENT [AVG]. It is actually a rather poor copy . The prototype of this coin is RIC 5 (Claudius II), 90 of AD 268-70. The coin is damaged.
