Cast cu-alloy headstud brooch dating to the Early Roman period. The brooch is almost complete and in very good condition with only the spring and pin missing. Bow, headstud, spring case and loop (for suspension of beads, etc?) are still intact. Bow and head are very sturdy, with a rectangular cross-section and limited amount of decoration: there are two thin grooves on the bow and two more around the headstud as well as vertical grooves (possibly a reel motif?) on the sides of the cross bar (see image). Perhaps a fragment of a Roman Ligula 1st to 4th century AD. It was used for extracting ointment, balsams, and powders from tubes and boxes. The ligula is not, strictly speaking, a surgical instrument, although it was used by physicians for applying medicament to affected areas on the body. The object is bent over to a point before tapering, flattening and terminating. Possibly used by a surgeon or for mixing paint or cosmetics. Similar to LANCUM-BC7F31. The object could as an alternative be a later Medieval brooch pin. The diameter is 80mm, thickness 4mm and the weight is 8g.

Cast copper alloy Headstud type bow brooch dating from c.70 through to the late 2nd century. The brooch is mostly complete although the catchplate and pin are missing and the headloop has broken off. It is a hinged type and the top of the pin is still present. The wings are broken at the ends but would have had square ends. They have moulded steps from the centre to the end. There is a circular boss at the top of the bow. Below this the decoration starts and goes all the way to the foot. This consists of lozenge shaped hollows in which enamel would have been. Cast cu-alloy mount dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The mount is dome-shaped and complete with an undecorated reverse and moulded, circular decoration on the obverse. It also has two small loops which are set opposite each other at the rim of the dome. However it is more likely that they were rivet holes rather than suspension loops, as this mount was probably worn as a belt or strap decoration.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The vessel was made of skin-coloured earthenware. The fabric looks like it was tempered with small quartzite crystals and probably some organic material that got burned in the kiln, but left impressions in the fabric. The sherd probably came off a medium-sized lipped bowl.

The ten coins range in date from AD69-79; all coins were minted under the emperor Vespasian, showing his head on the obverse. The collection was worth 20 asses, which is not an unreasonable amount to carry in a wrist-purse. Since we have no evidence of burial or of a container, it is hard to know whether these coins should be classified as a hoard or as a multiple casual loss. The ligula is not, strictly speaking, a surgical instrument, although it was used by physicians for applying medicament to affected areas on the body.
