Cast lead stud/disc. Irregular in form. Front face demonstrates a central pellet in relief with a surrounding circular form. The reverse is plain. Possibly a miss-cast token. The site of recovery of the object could suggest however that this object is Roman in date and could therefore be a lead pot mend. These were used to hold broken vessels together before glue. A hole would be drilled into a broken vessel along the line of the break and then molten lead poured through which would harden on cooling (Cuddeford 1994 page 51).

Denarius of Marcus Antonius minted in the east 32-31 BC. Augustus convinced the Roman world (wrongly) that Antonius' coins were made of base silver so examples like this remained in circulation until about AD 230. Catalogue number - 544, 21 in M.H.Crawford, 'Roman Republican Coinage', Cambridge 1974. Spink 457. Although this coin was struck in the late 30s BC, coins of its type stayed in circulation until the 3rd century AD when they are still being hoarded.

2nd century Romano-British disc brooch with Celtic-inspired triskele design (comp. Hattatt 2000, no. 120, p. 344). It was made from cast cu-alloy and decorated with dark blue and white(?) enamel. Part of the spring coil and the catch plate are still in place, but the pin is missing. It is possible that both spring coil and pin were made from iron (as dark red corrosion suggests). The obverse of the brooch is decorated with triskele motif that was filled in with dark blue enamel. Possibly a Roman steelyard weight in shape of Venus' head(?). The weight is made from bronze but the weight suggests that it was filled with lead(?). The head is finely carved with fine, classic features. On her head she is 'balancing' a bag or sack(?). The interpretation as steelyard weight derives from the object's shape and weight; however, the finder suggested it may have been part of a table's, chair's or chest's foot(?).

Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is…

Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights. Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.
