Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights. Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.

Medieval lead weight, mis-shapen (probably miscast). It looks like the final object should have been a plano convex spindle whorl, but the pieces of the mould probablz got misaligned during the casting process, and half the lead spilled out while the other half produced one half of the spindle whorl. The end product would have had one side decorated with a star shape and the other with a sun-ray pattern. These spindle whorls (lead weights) are difficult to date but it seems that the decorated version are more likely to be earlier, e.g. Roman or Saxon.

It has a rectangular cross-section throughout. The surface is uneven. Regular diagonal grooves have been cut into one face and both edges of the object. The opposite face has more irregular scratches or grooves. This sort of weight could have been used for many purposes for many periods and so is difficult to date precisely when found out of context. Late Medieval/early post-Medieval cast copper alloy cup weight, 13th-16th century. Dish shaped with flat base, straight sloping sides, and concave internally. The plain flat rim is decorated with at least 7 unevenly spaced pelleted annulets (others are now obscured). It has a green patina; the internal surface is roughened in places and a lighter green than the rest of the vessel or brown. The diameter is 19mm and the weight 11.79g. A lead spindle-whorl of Medieval date. It is a circular bi-conical spindle whorl with a central circular hole. It is decorated with alternating pellets and lines on both sides. (ten segments, each with three pellets on one face, five segments with between three and six pellets on the other) Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1100-1500. It has a creamy brown patina. The diameter is 37mm and the weight 53.54g.

This gives it the appearance of a button, however, Gordon Bailey (p. 83, Fig 9.392) points out that such artefacts were actually weights used to hold down the hem of ladies dresses or as curtain weights. A copper-alloy cup weight of post-medieval or modern date. It is part of a nested set and is circular in shape with sides which flare evenly upwards from the base to the rim. There is a stamp in the centre of the weight which is a dot within a ring. There is also a shield with a cross within it, a cross with a pellet at the end of the longer arm and the numeral 2. The object has a dark green patina. These types of weights were used for weighing gold and silver in the form of coin, small objects or as scrap metal or other precious materials (Saunders 2001, 125).

The weight takes the form of a gently tapering, sub oval profiled, cylinder, topped with a thick trapped iron loop. Possibly a ship's plumb or sounding weight, but these usually have a hollow base.
