Crudely cast large lead token. Edge of token has been broken. Post-medieval 17th -18th century in date. Obverse depicts flower design in relief set within an outer rim. Reverse depicts cross-hatching in relief within an outer rim and there is a pellet at the centre. It is unclear as to why lead tokens were produced although they appear numerous in the 17th and 18th centuries (Bailey 1999 page 56). They may have been produced as a form of working class low denomination currency associated with rural areas (Bailey 2000 pages 13-14). Alternative uses may have been for payment of cas…

Probably a Post Medieval lead alloy uniface token or possibly a weight. It is sub oval in plan. The artefact appears complete but damaged. The raised decoration consists of a roughly central castle or gatehouse. The possibility exists that this may represent Borwick Hall or Lancaster Castle. An illegible legend is visible near the edge. Probably dates to between c1600 and c1900 AD. The length is 32mm, width 29mm, and weight 5g.

Probably a copper alloy 17th century trade token. There is a capital letter M in the middle just underneath a circular green blob, there is another to the right which could be a capital letter I or it could be a 1. There also appears to be a small capital W to the left of the M. The diameter of the token is 16mm.

A complete lead alloy uniface Post Medieval token probably Powell Class 2 dating 1500 - 1850AD. The token has a hole punctured through the fabric which probably represents damage. It was probably cast as the hole does not appear to have been made after it was made. The initial 'T' is stamped into the token. The diameter is 27mm and the weight 13.09g. There are many similar objects such as, SUR-5C3CCD, BUC-89CE25 and YORYM-C9B1DA. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; th…

A cast lead alloy token of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The token is flat and circular and is decorated on one side with a raised design of eleven spokes radiating from a central pellet. Three concentric circles expand from the pellet. This design may represent a ship's wheel. The reverse of the token is flat and undecorated. The metal is greenish-brown colour and is worn. Tokens with such simple designs are very easy to make and continued in use for a long period. They have a huge range of designs and could have been used for various purposes such as substitute coinage, counting a…

Post Medieval biface cast lead or lead alloy circular token (Powell Class 1 and 7). The token has raised decoration on both faces. On one, a flower with six pointed oval petals, meeting at the remains of a central pellet, and within a damaged plain line border (Powell Class 1). The other face has a grid design with five parallel lines crossed at right angles by five near parallel lines (Powell Class 7). This has later been over marked with incised lines that imitate the original design. This grid may be a representation of a tally board or a game board. Lead tokens were easy to produc…

Copper alloy token or medallion of Victoria dating 1854 or more likely 1864. The obverse appears to have a double bust showing young and old Victoria with an empire inscription probably Indian in origin stating Victoria Queen and Empress. The reverse is stamped with A. W. H. It has been suggested that, if initial, surnames and addresses appear on such tokens, they may have been used as advertising tokens which were given out by local businesses to salesmen and customers. The diameter is 23mm 1.63g .

Post Medieval biface cast lead or lead alloy circular token (Powell Class 1 and 7). The token has raised decoration on both faces. On one, a flower with six pointed oval petals, meeting at the remains of a central pellet. This one's casting is reminiscent of tokens that can be firmly dated to the Post Medieval so a general date of c1600 to c1800 AD is suggested. There are a number of biface tokens on the database that combine variations on the flower & grid patterns. They include BH-398DB5, LANCUM-AA8DE1, LIN-FEF606, BUC-971B98, LANCUM-FAFC27, and ESS-F605C7. The diameter is 22m…

Copper alloy token probably a Manchester halfpenny. The right hand image features the United East India Company bale mark and the inscription PAYABLE AT INo. FIELDINGS GROCER & TEA DEALER. Despite its poor preservation the wording on the upper part can just be made out. The left image is a version of the Grocers Company arms. The supporters are griffins and the crest above the shield is a camel. The inscription would read MANCHESTER PROMISSORY HALFPENNY with the date 1793 beneath the shield. There are minor varieties but the token has the reference Dalton & Hamer, Lancashire, 128-134 …
