One half of a small Roman co-alloy seal box. It is a flat cylinder with two small protrusions opposite each other. The visible side is decorated with a chess-board pattern (hatched and non-hatched fields) while on the other side remainders of the deep groove through which the thread ran, is still visible. Roman seal boxes were used for the securing cords of wax tablets - which were then subsequently sealed with a wax impression from a ring.
