Heavily constructed copper alloy lobed plate with two piercings through which domed rivets pass. Its date and function are yet to be determined with any confidence. At first glance it appears to be a fixing plate for a hinge. However this is unlikely, but not impossible, as both rivets appear complete and there doesn't seem to be a large enough gap for the plate to have been attached to anything wooden. It may have been originally mounted on a book, or been a form of strap end/weight, or some form of mount or fitting. Dates to anytime between c43 and c1900 AD. The length is 60mm, w…

Cast cu-alloy mount dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The mount is dome-shaped and complete with an undecorated reverse and moulded, circular decoration on the obverse. It also has two small loops which are set opposite each other at the rim of the dome. However it is more likely that they were rivet holes rather than suspension loops, as this mount was probably worn as a belt or strap decoration.

A cast copper alloy vessel mount dating to the Roman period, probably the 1st/2nd centuries AD. It is almost complete and very worn. Is in the shape of a human face/head but the features are almost completely obliterated. The hairline is barely visible. It is domed with traces of solder on the back. At the top it has a small loop for suspension of a handle and there was a smaller protrusion (another loop?) at the bottom; the latter is missing now. Dimensions: length: 49mm, width: 27mm, thickness: 3mm and weight: 19.31g.

Cast copper alloy hollow-backed mount in the form of a human face in refief. Well defined features, slit mouth with possible moustache defined by slanting grooves to either side eminating from beneath the nose. A pair of short protrusions from the chin resembles a forked beard. Drilled 'dimple' on top lip, well defined oval eyes and eyebrows with drilled pupils. The ornate hair comprises a central 'quiff' and sides standing proud of the head and defined by curving incised grooves. The face has been drilled on the left hand side with a 3mm diameter hole. It also appears that the right e…

Cast cu-alloy furniture mount or fitting dating to the Early Roman period depicting the bust of the Roman goddess Diana. While the front of the mount shows moulded features such as Diana's face, dress, hair and part of her quiver, the reverse is flat and slightly hollow. Also, there may be remains of solder in the hollow of the reverse. The front surface is shiny and looks quite worn while the reverse is pitted and not very worn, possibly showing remains of solder. Depictions of Diana are not very common finds in Britain: in 1992, there were four known bronze figurines from Britain fro…

Copper alloy mount or strap fitting, very probably dating from the Roman period, c. 1st-4th century. The mount is incomplete, but survives in fair condition. It is flat circular in shape with what looks like two lugs (possibly a broken rectangular loop) on the reverse. It is possible that it had some kind of enamelled or inlaid decoration on the obverse, but none of that remains: it is plan without any marks. If the reverse was a rectangular loop its function could have been that of a strap or belt slide. If the two lus were separate it may have been a decorative mount attached to lea…

A Roman copper alloy mount in the form of a bust of Minerva with a copper-alloy stud projecting from the reverse. Minerva wears a high crested helmet and traces of a cuirass are visible in the decoration of the chest, though the object is incredibly worn. The length is 52mm, the width is 21mm and the weight 22.88g. Feugère notes that the dating for these objects is a work in progress, though it is clear that each type was not necessarily used at the same time ( Feugère 2004, 33). The symbol of Minerva, Goddess of wisdom, is appropriate for such objects and can thus associate t…

Cast copper-alloy strap end mount of vine foliage design and two rivet holes. One rivet appears to be missing, but the other one (which was probably made from iron, judging from the red corrosion around the rivet hole) is still in place. The hook is bent and the loop of another mount still attached to it (mount is broken off though).

Fragment of a cast copper alloy object with Latin inscription. It is flat and rectangular, with a broad transverse groove across the complete short end. Along the two long edges are double parallel grooves with oblique incisions between, forming a cable pattern. The inscription is written in seriffed capital letters on two lines, divided by a double parallel line with a bold zigzag line in between, apparently made from a series of V-shaped punches. The first line of the inscription reads DEVM.COLE [ ]; the second reads TIME:TEV [ ], both lines leading up to the break. The revers…

Outside the circle is a repeated pattern of a leaf shape, followed by a narrow triangle.
