~~The find consists of a cut metal fragment, perhaps from an ingot; weight 3.58 grams. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum identified the metal as a tin-lead alloy with iron and some antimony, but no detectable precious metal. The find does not therefore qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. B.M. Ager Curator Department of Prehistory & Europe British Museum

A copper alloy ingot. It is basically rectangular in shape but with rounded ends and a waisted centre. It is flat on the bottom and domed on the top. The base has a series of vertical lines moulded into it which may be a relic of the moulding process. It has an even brown patina with little corrosion or damage. It is difficult to date this type of object, a wide date range has been allocated but it may be relatively recent in date.  Dimensions: 78mm long, 20mm wide and 12mm deep approximately. It weighs 78.35g

This report concerns three items found near Carnforth in Lancashire in 2010. The items were found close to the find-spot of a Viking hoard discovered in 1997 (TAR 1998-1999, no. 84), and it was considered possible that the new finds might be stray finds from that hoard. Two of the finds are undiagnostic. Both appear to be a fairly base silver or lead alloy. One is a slender ingot with a section in the shape of an isosceles triangle with rounded angles, 72 x 8 x 8 mm, weight 39.38g, broken at one end. The form is known in the Viking Age, but it is undiagnostic, as the form is also kn…

Silver ingot fragment and fragment of white metal casting debris from the Carnforth area, Lancashire The find consists of two items: a) a fragment of a silver ingot; and b) what appears to be a molten fragment of casting debris. Both objects were found on exactly the same spot as a small Viking hoard found in the 1990s, the Carnforth or Tewitfield Hoard, and are most likely unrecovered pieces from it. a) Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot fragment of 96 - 98%, the remainder being copper, gold and lead. Thi…

Copper alloy bar ingot with rounded and flattish ends 'finger' form. The ingot is D shaped in section with a flat base and convex tip and tapers in width and thickness from one end to the other. The length is 59mm and the width is 11mm. The ingot is not diagnostic and is therefore difficult to date; ingots of this form in precious metals have been found associated with late Early Medieval period finds. (Blackburn and Rogerson Medieval Archaeology 1993, 222-4). It has been suggested that copper alloy ingots from Norfolk of bar-like form and with transverse hammering may belong to the V…

A substantial lead alloy ingot. The ingot is roughly rectangular in shape and section. It is slightly concave on one side, which may be contraction after casting. It has an even brown patina. It approximates to 55 Scandinavian units of 4.43g, although at this scale that is not conclusive. Although lead was used widely over a long period of time, this artefact has been found in association with early medieval finds on a possible Romano-British site. It is therefore suggested that this might be early medieval in date. Dimensions: 70mm long and 30mm wide, 15mm deep and weighs 240g
