Possible Post-medieval copper alloy tool, maybe a chisel. There is a bulbous collar stop between the tang and the wide flat blade. The tang appears bent but it may have had a curved handle or been one end of a double bladed tool. The object is corroded. Possibly made for use in an industry were a non sparking tool was desireable, eg for use in maitaining mill machinery. Probably dates to between c1500 and c1900 AD. It also bears similarities to a swivelling 'banner' from Medieval horse harness (such as NMS-810B25). The length is 43mm, the width is 22mm, thickness 11mm, and the weig…

Post-Medieval large iron chisel, with a well-defined point and flattened top that would have been hammered dating 1500 to 1800AD. Similar to BUC-243AD8. The chisel was found on the site of a ruined building of unknown purpose. The building consists of two connected rectangular structures containing boulders with features including iron trusses for a former roof, an arched Gothick doorway on one side, and on the other a doorway with a Tuscan architrave, a moulded cornice, and a pediment. The length is 200mm, the width is 43mm and the weight too heavy for scales.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Bronze Age copper alloy chisel probably a broken tang. The object is flat and rectangular in plan. The upper end has suffered an old break and is very worn. The fragment is ovoid in section towards the break and expands slightly in width at the centre. From this expansion, the lower section is triangular in section and tapers to a point which is rounded in plan. The sides of the lower section are slightly thicker than the flattened central area, possibly indicating that the edges had raised sides which are now worn to almost the same thickness as the re…

A Bronze Age copper alloy chisel fragment. The chisel is incomplete only the blade survives. It is sub-trapezoid in plan, the straight sides flaring from the break towards the convex cutting edge. The piece is of thin, flat section, tapering at the edges. The blade thins to 2mm thick at the cutting edge. It is heavily corroded, with only very small fragments of the original surface remaining. It is dark brown in colour, giving the appearance of iron, but is non-magnetic. Such chisels are generally thought to be wood working tools. Similar on the database to SOM-589161, NMS-769173 and …

Cast copper alloy broken flanged chisel or small axe wood-working tool dating from the middle Bronze Age 1500 - 1150BC. The chisel flares outwards towards the cutting edge with no stop ridge but the broad faces of the haft slope up quite abruptly to meet the full thickness of the blade, the body has narrow flanges on either side of the body which itself narrows slightly from the centre towards the butt which is broken and missing. The flanged chisel is a precursor to the Palstave and shares similarities with NMS-894E92 on the database and though smaller may well be a similar transitio…
