A cast copper-alloy chape, probably from a dagger dating to the Medieval period. It is a cone shaped chape with an edge to edge seam and a separately cast tip which has been soldered into place. There is a single decorative line approximately one third down from the open end.

Cast copper alloy chape possibly dating from the early medieval or medieval period, that is the 11th-15th century. The chape is damaged and incomplete. It appears undecorated, but a superficial incised decoration may have worn away over the centuries. The surface is rough to the touch and extremely worn. Originally, the chape was square in cross-section. It is curved at the bottom and there is some residue inside which may be congealed sand and corrosive products or possibly even part of the organic (?) sheath. The shape of the chape suggests that it was made for the sheath of a point…
