Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. There is a second runner, perhaps leading to the next mould, projecting to the side. The object is 22.7mm long, 9.7mm high, 16.8mm wide and weighs 7g. It has a grey green patina. For a similar, although lead alloy, example see HESH-CFC988. A number of these objects have been dated to the B…

Lead or lead alloy fragment of an unknown date, possibly casting waste or a partially melted or miscast object. It does appears to have deliberately cast holes, similar to the openwork style, and possible ring and dot decoration. Its original intended purpose is unknown but if it isn't casting waste it could be part of a Late Early Medieval to early Medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class E, similar to LANCUM-2409F1 but cast in lead. Other lead alloy strap ends of the period on the database include NMS-82ED04, NLM-890976, and NMS-45E545. It may have been be a failed lead mold former asso…

Copper alloy metal working waste of uncertain date. The large piece measures 56mm in length, 65mm in width, 25mm thick and weighs, 277.70g. Five smaller fragments or droplets of metal working waste were recovered close to the larger piece. The waste is un-diagnostic but does indicate metal working may have taken place in the area.

Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

Cast lead object. Possibly casting waste. The object is an irregular shape being tapered at one terminus and circular in section, and the opposing terminus is flat in section and wide. There is a 45 degree angle bend in the artefact which appears in profile. Possibly Roman in date due to the nature of the site where recovered.

A copper alloy casting sprue/jet of probable Roman date. A truncated cone shaped body with a single projection. It has a slightly concave base. The casting jet has a mid green. These sprues are commonly found in late Bronze Age hoards, but can be of other dates as well and it is possible that it is Roman used in the making of a small object like a brooch. Similar to LANCUM-E8F754, LEIC-370216, SF-7BABF5 and WILT-FA4F72 14mm in height, 18mm in diameter, and weighs 8.06 grams.

A lead alloy object of post-medieval date. The fragment is incomplete and has possibly formed as casting waste. It is sub-oval in plan and flat. The edges of the object are undulating and the upper face is smooth. The upper face has been inscribed with the name William Aspinall. The opposite face of the object is worn and plain. It has a light brownish-white patina. The object may relate to William Aspinall of Lathom who is recorded as a boat person in the 1800s, see http://www.boatfamilies.org.uk/getperson.php?personID=I13800&tree=CanalFamily1. Post Medieval lead alloy casting jet. It is sub pyramidal in shape with three evenly spaced short stubs projecting toward the tip from about halfway up the object. These are the sprues that would have gone into three different moulds or channels. The 'pyramid' is the central point into which the molten lead allot would have been formed. The base of the pyramid would actually have beeen uppermost and the central depressionis typical of contraction when cooling. The colour of the alloy suggests a date between c1600 and c2000 AD. Length 46mm, width 42mm, height 32mm, and weight 262.65g.

A fragment of copper alloy, probable casting waste, possibly of Bronze Age dating (2150 BC to 800 BC). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Roman Period (c.2150 BC - 410 AD). The fragment is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is most likely part of a copper ingot, prior to being smelted and cast. It is a mid to dark green colour. A couple of small areas of iron staining, probably due to impurities in the copper. An e…
