A special type of lithic flake with a chisel-like edge, which was probably used for gouging or carving wood, leather or bone. This is a small, fine flint implement, oval in shape with a sharp point, dating from late Mesolithic to early Neolithic. Conchoidal ripples are pronounced on both surfaces. It is reddish brown in colour. It measures 20.64mm x 14.82mm and weighs 0.48g. These flints form part of a large antiquarian collection of general surface finds. It consists of lithic implements and associated waste flakes. The collection is sourced to, but not specifically identified fr…

Mid to late Mesolithic chert fine chisel or burin. The chert is not one of the usual local types and appears to the same is the the glassy mid grey/green chert of the North Lakes. The tool is sub triangular in section. There are removals to the entire surface, with multiple retouches at both ends. The implement was probably originally mounted in the end of a stick or piece of antler. The working end is quite worn. It shows evidence of at least one small break. The tool continued to be used as this step fracture is also worn. Dating to between c7000 and c4001 BC. The length is 18mm,…

Late Mesolithic to Early Iron Age chert microlithic burin. It has been formed on a tertiary piece of black chert debitage. There is wear gloss on most of the chert. The burin has been formed at the distal point with the removals creating a point 2mm high. A small area of low angled, scaled, semi-invasive retouch to one of the distal shoulders has produced a notch that could also be utilised as a tool. There is a series of abrupt parallel removals at the proximal end, probably to make it easier to use, and to apply pressure in particular. Probably dates to between c7000 and c400 BC, pro…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire

Mid to late Bronze Age mottled mid to late grey chert burin, possibly also used as a chisel. It is sub square in section and knapped in the crude fashion diagnostic of the later Bronze Age The knapping toward the proximal is more controlled than that of end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. With the exception of the proximal end, where cortex remains, there are removals to the entire surface. The knapping toward the proximal narrows and shapes the section in a manner that suggests it was originally mounted on the end of a piece of wood or antler. Dating to between c…

Late Neolithic to Early Iron Age chert burin. It has been formed on a secondary piece of black 'Marles' chert, probably a worked out core. The retained limestone cortex on the proximal end exhibits quite a high degree of wear, and there is wear gloss on most of the chert. There is sub-parallel, semi-short, abrupt retouch to the shorter of the tool's mesals. This is probably to make the toll more ergonomic but would also have created a small but functional side scraper. The shoulder of this mesal has been reduced with a series of removals at its distal end. The longer mesal has short, …
