Fragment of a cast cu-alloy crotal or rumbler bell, probably dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. 17th-19th century. Only half of one side remains, but unfortunately not the handle or a maker's mark which would have given us a more accurate date and possibly the name of a maker or the region where the bell came from.

A cast copper-alloy rumbler or crotal bell. The bell is plain and undecorated. At the top sits a loop on which the bell would have been attached to a strap. On the upper half are two square apertures on either side. The lower part has broken away but what remains shows it would have had a slot with circular terminals.

Broken cu-alloy bell, iron clanger missing. It is difficult to date and to establish the purpose of the bell - it may have possibly served as door bell(?) since there is no loop for suspension at the top but two curved hooks instead.

Unidentified post-medieval artefact, possibly a fragment of a bell. It was made up of two components, one evolving the other other in a swivelling motion, but it is broken at both ends and a certain identification is not possible. However, it is possible that the sheet metal 'disc' (which is frayed and damaged around all edges) is the remaining central fragment of the top of a sheet metal bell, while the more substantial cast component is the handle.

An incomplete copper alloy and iron harness bell probably of Post-Medieval date (AD 1600-1800). The bell resembles the form of an open mouthed bell with a flared rim. Ferrous corrosion at the top may suggest an iron clapper has been lost, possibly connected to a loop or other suspension device. The object is smaller than, and distinct in form from, the spherical crotal bells attached to livestock. Similar to NLM-FEE894 on the database. There is also a possibility that it is a Roman bell and similar examples are illustrated in Crummy (1995:127). Crummy, N., 1983 Colchester Archaeo…

The bell is circular in plan, with straight sides that taper towards the top, angling inwards and terminating in a D-shaped pendant loop with circular perforation. Two ridges with flanking grooves run transversely around the shoulders of the bell, with a further ridge just below the pendant loop. Shallower ridges are visible inside the bell, running transversely in parallel across the whole length of the object. A small protrusion within a patch of orange iron corrosion within the bell is all the remains…

A complete cast spherical bell probably for hawking of Early Post Medieval probably dating 15th to 16th Centuries AD. This style is typical of what have been classed as 16th century AD hawking bells, however with no mark or datable context there is no way of saying this is definitely over 300 years old, though it may be. And so it has not been reported as treasure. The bell is formed of upper and lower hemispheres soldered or brazed together, in a raised join around the centre and decorated with a cable ornament. The upper hemisphere is plain with a silver loop soldered to the cent…
