Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.

Cast lead stud/disc. Irregular in form. Front face demonstrates a central pellet in relief with a surrounding circular form. The reverse is plain. Possibly a miss-cast token. The site of recovery of the object could suggest however that this object is Roman in date and could therefore be a lead pot mend. These were used to hold broken vessels together before glue. A hole would be drilled into a broken vessel along the line of the break and then molten lead poured through which would harden on cooling (Cuddeford 1994 page 51).

A lead plano-convex lead weight, probably a spindle whorl. It has a central perforation and it is decorated with what is possibly a moulded five-pointed star in relief. Lead weights like these are common finds and it has been noted that (if it is a spindle whorl), the weight of the spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5g) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35g) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, 184). This example weighs 31.72g, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such …
