Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

A cast lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Early Medieval to Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1100. The whorl is circular and has two flat faces of different sizes with curved sides, a shape which is classified as Walton Rogers form A2, thought to be in use in AD 600 - 1100. It has a circular central aperture of 9.5mm diameter. This size of spindle hole can suggest a Late Saxon date onwards. There is a depression which runs between the outer edge and the central aperture on one face. The whorl is uneven, being higher on one side than the other. It is undecorated and has a brown…

Lead conical spindle whorl, probably dating to the early medieval period (c. AD 700 - 1000). The spindle whorl is crudely shaped and unsymmetrical; it is broadly circular in plan and triangular in section, with a circular, central perforation. The spindle whorl has a white patina. It is 16.75mm in diameter, 12.50mm in thickness and weighs 15.90g. The diameter of the central perforation is 8.94mm. The form of this object is similar to examples that have been recorded as early medieval in date. These include: SWYOR-6E4DAA, NLM-5EA8A8 and NLM-09370E.

Small cast lead rectangular Viking weight dating from 800 to 1100 AD. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin openwork copper-alloy plate; gilding survives in the grooves of the decoration. The design is unclear, but may represent two interlacing animals, perhaps birds seen in profile. A long neck ending in a head with round eye and long beak appears to extend from a body with a D-shaped wing decorated with two oblique grooves. A second long neck or body may cross over the first, and also end in a beak. There is a large roundel between the two beaks, apparently a space-fillin…

Lead alloy Early Medieval sword pommel probably Petersen type X dating 950-1000AD. A rectangular opening in the base would have housed the tang of the grip, and a hole through the hump would have been for the end of the tang with a cap or rivet on the end. The lead is patinated and scratched. The lead pommel exhibits the staining from gilding and appears to depict a bird with folded back wings. The pommel conforms most closely to Oakshott's Type A or Type B forms, suggesting a date of between AD 950 and AD 1100. It appears to be something of a transition between a later Viking or Angl…

Lead spindle whorl or possibly gaming piece of early medieval to post-medieval date (c. 800 - 1650 AD). The object is cylindrical in form with a central circular perforation. The top face is embellished by rectangular indents, giving the impression of crenellation. The object has a light-brown patina. It is 25.54mm in diameter and 10.85mm in thickness. The diameter of the central perforation is 9.84mm. It weighs 37.40g. Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date without archaeological context. Cylindrical examples with decoration only on one side have been dated to the early medieva…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a pattern of dots and lines in relief. The lines divide each ring-shaped surface in ca. ten crudely designed but equally-sized cells, five of which show a central design of an 'arrow' or 'heart', while the remaining five cells show two dots set above each other vertically. The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or t…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is very crudely decorated on both sides: while one side shows a crude pattern of criss-crossing lines in relief, the other shows at least one circle of dots around the central perforation. There may be two more circles of dots - one closer to the perforation, the other closer to the rim -, but they are not as clear at the central ring. The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sin…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a simple ring-and-dot motif: however, whilst there are six ring-and-dots on one side, the other shows only four. The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or to weigh down cloth (table cloths, curtains, etc). Similar items found in archaeological contexts have been dated to ca. AD1400-1600.

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…
