A lead or lead alloy sphere of unknown purpose and unknown age. It is highly unlikely to be cannon shot for a couple of reasons. Firstly it does not conform to any known bore of the seventeenth century or later. Secondly, it is not solid lead as it is too light for its size. This latter fact also excludes a lot of the other usual uses for lead balls. The comparatively low weight may be due to the construction of the sphere or it may be manufactured from a lighter alloy. It may be part of larger object. If it is shot it is more likely to be for use in a pre seventeenth century firearm,…

Lead alloy, or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl of unknown age. The weight has a circular perforation. It has an external diameter of 21mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 6mm. The weight has seen a lot of use and has suffered damage and wear. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perforation (ibid.). It is possible, therefore, tha…

Lead or lead alloy fragment of an unknown date, possibly casting waste or a partially melted or miscast object. It does appears to have deliberately cast holes, similar to the openwork style, and possible ring and dot decoration. Its original intended purpose is unknown but if it isn't casting waste it could be part of a Late Early Medieval to early Medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class E, similar to LANCUM-2409F1 but cast in lead. Other lead alloy strap ends of the period on the database include NMS-82ED04, NLM-890976, and NMS-45E545. It may have been be a failed lead mold former asso…

Unusual lead alloy mount of unknown date and period it appears to be in the form a medal decorated with a swastika. The stamped cross is more consistent with a later Medieval style, suggesting it dates to the 12th to 16th Centuries AD. The pendant is a mid grey in colour, with an even surface patina. A direct parallel for this find has not been located at the time of recording. The swastika, the 'crux gammatica' (a cross formed from 4 Greek capital gamma characters) was widely used long before the Christian period, possibly in pagan religious contexts. It did however continu…

A complete circular biconical cast lead-alloy weight, probaby a spindle whorl dating from the Roman period judging by the form and grey patina, i.e. AD72-410. The lead weight is biconical in cross-section with a rounded base and top. It is decorated with a simple pattern of a rough chevrons. The weight is 28mm in diameter and weighs 23.5g. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. T…

A lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical in form. Both the top and bottom of the weight show signs of iron corrosion where a suspension loop would have been attached with an iron bar through the centre. The surface is now a light grey/brown colour with numerous scratches and dents including a large rectangular depression. Many similar examples have been found on the PAS database; for example NMS-1815C6, SWYOR-B85A02 and KENT-DC6FC3. The length is 45mm and the width is 30mm.

Roman to Post Medieval lead or lead alloy suspended weight, possibly a steelyard weight or a replacement pendulum weight. It is sub-pyramidal in form. The apex of the 'pyramid' contains two perforations in the lead which would have been used to suspend the weight. One of the perforations appears to have either failed or been poorly executed. There are remains of a chalky coating on the weight. It is hard to tell if this is intentional or the result of being interred in a lime rich medium like mortar, possibly lost and trapped in a wall. Dates anytime from c43 to c1750 AD. Length is…

Lead alloy cast model possibly representing the head and bow of a 'T' shaped or Dolphin Roman brooch at 1:1 scale. The length is 63mm, the width is 25mm thickness 11mm. First, this may be a trial piece or model of Roman date, or possibly a symbolic replacement for a brooch. A lead alloy weight. It has been formed by rolling a sub circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former. Hence the narrowing 'flap' of material can be seen along one side of the narrow weight, basicaly cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends.
