Black Pennines chert borer possibly Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic 6500-2900 BC. The chert is a dull black in colour with traces of the original white banding at the distal end. The surface reveals traces of weathering but this would be consistent with the original working of the weathered face for extraction. There are known sources of black chert in the South Pennines and this may well be naturally occurring around Boulsworth Hill and Thursden Valley. The length is 42mm, the width 30mm and the depth 16mm.

Two Mesolithic to Neolithic chert drills or borers. There is considerable wear to the tips of both, and wear to the retouch as well. The larger (object 2) was probably mounted in a stick, bone or antler. Dating to between c8300 & c2500 BC. The first tool is on a secondary flake with a small area of cortex retained at the proximal end. It is 15mm in length, 7mm in width, 4mm in thickness and weighs 0.35grms. The second tool is on a tretiary flake and is 21mm in length, 7mm in width, 5mm in thickness and weighs 0.95grms. Combined weight is 1.30g. The artefacts were f…

Mesolithic to Neolithic black chert drill or borer. The working on the point shows signs of heavy wear. The tool bears a close resemblance to LANCUM-58E110, found on Boulsworth Hill to the south, and also made of black chert. Probably dates from c8300 to c3500 BC. Measures 28.5 in length, 19mm in width, 13mm in thickness and weighs 7grms. Found in association with LANCUM-A3ACB2 on an elevated site.

Record ID: LANCUM-3E7173
Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Bronze Age black chert tool, banded with limestone. Probably a heavy duty borer or similar as the 'pointy end' is high quality black chert. It may possibly be a core but its hard to envisage why the knapper be striking flakes from the limestone apart from doing it to produce a shape. Probably Bronze Age due to comparitive crudeness of knapping, but could be anytime from the early Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age. Dating between c8300 and c800 BC, most likely c1500 to c800 BC. The length is 40mm, width 40mm, thickness 30mm, and the weight is 56.8g.
