Bronze Age palstave axe dating from the Wilburton or Penard phases, c.1300-1000 BC. It is mostly complete although the upper part is so worn that no flanges remain and it ends in a rounded point. The stop is still visible on both sides although one side is much more worn than the other. Below the stop on the least worn side, 3 raised vertical ribs can be seen. The blade is mostly complete although it is slightly uneven and it is possible the cutting edge has broken off. There was possibly a side loop on one side where something can be seen but it is not clear due to the amount of wear…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of copper alloy, probable casting waste, possibly of Bronze Age dating (2150 BC to 800 BC). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Roman Period (c.2150 BC - 410 AD). The fragment is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is most likely part of a copper ingot, prior to being smelted and cast. It is a mid to dark green colour. A couple of small areas of iron staining, probably due to impurities in the copper. An e…

Cast bronze object of uncertain date and function. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The surface of the object is uneven; one edge is straight while the others have broken in antiquity. There is a large circular perforation at the top edge of the object and a smaller perforation diagonal to this at the lower edge. These may have been intended to contain rivets. The function of the object is unknown however the patina indicates that it has some age to it. It has a mid-green patina.

Complete cast copper alloy short flanged axehead, probably related to Type Callendar, dating from the Middle Bronze Age period c. 1400-1200BC. The axe survives in complete and in very good condition. The edge as well as the top of the butt are very worn, but overall the surfaces are in fair condition. The cross section is rectangular and the flanged are flat diamond-shaped. There is no stop ridge, but a small, low edge to stop the haft from pushing forwards. Even though there is a shallow crescent-shaped moulding, this is functional rather than ornamental and the axe is plain without …

This record has been updated and reinterpreted 4/5/21 by Peter Reavill with the support of Dr Brendan O'Connor. The original record was made 18 years ago on the original PAS database. A cast copper alloy short-flanged axehead of Middle Bronze Age date (1600-1250 BC). Unfortunately there is only one view of the axe making the form difficult to be identify specifically to a type or sub-type. The blade is worn and crescentic in shape and the upper blade has a shield pattern directly below the relatively prominent stopridge. This stop ridge is not fused to the side flanges which …

An almost complete cast copper alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1000 - 800 BC). The object can be classified as the Ewart Park phase of metalwork. The object is sub-rectangular in plan with the cutting edge expanding outwards to form a convex cutting edge. The cutting edge is damaged and worn which occurred both in recent and ancient times. The cutting edge measures 53.47mm in width and is 3.29mm thick. The socket has a sub square mouth (internal width 25.47mm, internal length 33.06mm, external width 37.09mm, external length 44.26mm and the wall of the mouth is 5-6mm …

An Early Bronze Age III - Middle Bronze Age I (1800-1500 BC) flanged axe head or axe shaped ingot, possibly water rolled, and unusual in its crudeness. Its uneven shape makes accurate measurement and labelling of areas difficult, but the thickest section is approximately 14mm at its widest pont, and the blade tip is an uneven 2-4 mm in fluctuation. The surface is pitted and appears to have delaminated; areas show different levels and kinds of corrosion, varying from predictable greens to a blueish tinge. The rear of the object is not bilaterally symmetrical but has a thumbprint-s…
