Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. The ten coins range in date from AD69-79; all coins were minted under the emperor Vespasian, showing his head on the obverse. Large Romano-British button and loop fastener of the double-headed variant. Ring, plano-convex in section, single incised line circumscribes edge towards back. Symmetrically opposed moulded ridges with inscribed circles either side produce two zoomorphic 'faces' on the ring. Shank is split with terminating rectangular plate behind which is a strap-bar. The rectangular plate is decorated on its front upper edge with a meander pattern, the bottom edge has a single incised line.

Denarius of Marcus Antonius minted in the east 32-31 BC. Augustus convinced the Roman world (wrongly) that Antonius' coins were made of base silver so examples like this remained in circulation until about AD 230. Catalogue number - 544, 21 in M.H.Crawford, 'Roman Republican Coinage', Cambridge 1974. Spink 457. Although this coin was struck in the late 30s BC, coins of its type stayed in circulation until the 3rd century AD when they are still being hoarded.

Possibly a plated copy of a Roman Republican denarius by the moneyer Brutus (M Iunius Brutus). Mint of Rome, 54 BC RRC (Crawford) 433/1 There are two small perforations - possible evidence for re-use as a pendant? The perforations were made just below the feet of the lictors and Brutus and might indicate that it was worn on a neclace in such a fashion that the wearer could see the reverse coin the right way around (looking down) but not the onlooker standing in front of the wearer.

Cast copper-alloy Roman Trumpet brooch, complete except for the pin. The pin was part of a hinge mechanism and there is no spring coil underneath the plain trumpet-shaped head. The small head stud is plain and the large, heavy bow is decorated with the for this brooch type typical alternating petal/reel mouldings. Furthermore, it seems that at some point, after the foot had broken off it was replaced/repaired with a small metal sheet (probably bronze) which was attached to the remainder of the original foot with two very small rivets which are fragmentary today. A lead weight spindle whorl (or possibly net sinker or trap weight) of conical shape. The spindle whorl is 29mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. If decorated, the decoration is hard to make out: it probably consisted of random lines in relief on the diagonal surface. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). Incomplete Wirral type brooch dating from the Roman period: Circular lead, edge damaged. It is decorated with a transverse ridge and regular incised lines. The upper side of the bow is divided into three rectangular panels down to the mid bow. Inlaid with enamel in squares - only three cells survive. There is an extension at the mid bow. Below the lower bow tapers to a missing foot. The hinged pin and the copper alloy axis bar is secured in pierced lugs.

There is no decoration or evidence of a potter's stamp. This sherd derives from a mortarium made in the Mancetter / Hartshill factory in Warwickshire and is probably second century in date.

Copper alloy coin or medallion with a diameter of 36mm and a weight of 13.23g. This piece is incredibly worn. On the obverse there is a faint trace of a bust right which might have the features of Carausius (AD 286-93) - sadly this cannot be captured on a photograph. Although this might seem far-fetched, the British Museum has a medallion of Carausius which measures 38mm in diameter and weighs 13.21g.
