Description: Complete cast silver cuff link composed of two small decorated discs with a loop on the reverse. They are linked by an oval cast silver chain link. The discs/buttons are circular in plan with a down-turned edge. The two discs are both decorated with two hearts (set side by side, but not conjoined) that are crowned with one single crown which in turn is composed of two arches bridging two small fleur-de-lys ornaments. Discussion: Several cuff links of a very similar type were discussed in the Treasure Annual Report 2004 (e.g. 2004 T220, 2004 T371; 2004 T473); however, no…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver seal most likely from the 16th-17th century and there is a record of arms related to the arms on it from the early 16th century. The matrix is not from Lancashire and it is curious how it turned up there. It is possible that it's deposition relates to the English Civil War 1642-1651 when men of Shropshire are known to have fought in Lancashire. The Kings army was originally based in Shrewsbury and then moved into Cheshire and then Lancashire. The Royalists recieved a defeat at Whalley which is not too far from the findspot. The arms are, "Argent, a chevron gules between thr…

Silver badge in the form of a female bust, in quarter profile (left), wearing early sixteenth-century dress, including a 'kennel-shaped' head-dress with hair loose beneath. The low square neckline of her dress reveals a cruciform pendant that she wears around her neck. The object has a cabled border on its lower edge, probably representing a crest wreath or torse; it may be therefore that this badge is heraldic. On the reverse there are two extant stitching loops, one at the top behind the head, and one in the left corner. A third loop is missing but a scar remains in the right c…

This is a copper alloy finger-ring often called a decade ring or rosary ring, probably dating from the 16th or 17th century AD. The bezel of the ring is engraved with the letters IHS ( a Greek abbreviation for Jesus), a cross and three arrow shapes which represent the three nails in Jesus's hands and feet. The ring is decorated wth ten other knobs. The decade ring takes its name from the fact that it has ten knobs to help in counting prayers, similar to (but more discreet than) a rosary. Rosaries were forbidden in England and Wales by a statute of 1571, but the act does not mentio…

A Post-Medieval silver posy ring with a plain outer hoop, the interior gilded. The inner hoop bears the inscription 'LOVE EVER *' in upper-case letters. The finger-ring is D-shaped in section. This upper-case inscription is recorded in Joan Evans' English Posies & Posy Rings, 1931.
