Record ID: LANCUM-B144C0
Object type: STAMP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy object, possibly a stamp. It is of rounded hourglass shape and cast solid. All surfaces are smooth and plain expect for the top which displays a small circular dent and the bottom ('stamp') which displays three deep, parallel grooves. It seems unlikely that it was some kind of personal stamp, espeically because there is no visible means of suspension, but shape and 'stamp' pattern on the bottom suggest a similar use.

This is a socketed clay pipe bowl (socket broken off) depicting Alexander II, the Russian Czar (1818-1881). The pipe was made by Gambier, one of the best known French pipe manufacturers, who specialised in making high quality figural pipes. It was their pattern number 822 and was already in production by 1868, since it is shown in a catalogue of that year. Gambier pipes are relatively common in late C19th English contexts since they were imported in large…
