Post-medieval elongated silver thimble dating to the 17th century AD. The thimble is complete constructed from a sheet of silver soldered along the edges with the side seam clearly visible attached to a separate domed top soldered to the almost straight sides. A plain band runs around the top of the body of the thimble separating the dome. Ten evenly spaced circular motifs are stamped immediately above this upper band. The body and most of the dome is punched with square indentations, giving a 'waffle' effect and decorated with oval shaped bands possibly representing strap work conjoi…

Post Medieval copper alloy thimble dates to between c1500 and c1550 AD. The thimble had a comparatively flat crown. It has a spiral pattern of hand stamped indentations on the sides and crown, with a plain band around the base. The thimble has been squashed but is almost complete. The only missing section is the majority of the folded over part of the band so that for the majority of its circumference it is now only one layer of metal thick. Length is 23mm, width 29mm, depth 12mm, and the weight 3.48g. See also KENT-397D73 (very similar), SWYOR-97C0E5, LON-E95502, and LVPL-21AB35.

A copper alloy 'beehive' thimble of two piece construction. It consists of the rolled decorated tube and a plain domed top. The decoration does not appear to be machined. It consists of seven bands of a cable motif, each going in the opposing direction to the two bands adjacent to it. There are remnants of what appears to be a gilded finish in the pattern. The top appears to have had a white metal finish, possibly silvering or tinning. The rim of the thimble has been largely lost, leaving an uneven edge. Dating has proved problematic due to the lack of a convincing parallel. Overall s…

A spiral of drilled sub-square pits (probably) start at the centre of the crown and continue around the walls to the base; corrosion product obscures on the crown. The walls of the thimble are thin (1 mm thick). The metal is a dull dark red-brown in colour. The length is 19mm, the width is 22mm and the weight 4.70g. Post Medieval to Modern lead alloy palm guard or needle pad. It is more or less circular in plan. Objects like this would have been wrapped in cloth then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when tightening cord or using awls and punches in an industry such as leather working or sail making. Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast on occasion in oyster shells. Dates to between c1600 and c1970 AD. The diameter is 40mm and the weight is 94.85g.

A cast, lead palm guard, probably dating from the 17th-20th century (c. AD 1600 - c. AD 1800). It is a rounded oval, with convex and concave surfaces. Dating of these artefacts is very difficult; the earliest examples seem to date from the 17th century, although they may have been in use right through to the 20th century (Bailey, 1993, page 64). This example has a patchy, cream patina. The diameter is 77mm.

The body slightly flares and the circular indentations are arranged in a spiral form leaving a plain band at both the top and bottom. The rim of the thimble is bare and separated from the indented area by an incised girth line. There are several vertical tears at the base of the thimble. Silver Post Medieval (c. 1800-1900) thimble. The outer face of this thimble has machine-made horizontal lines of circular indentations. The apex is decorated with a series of concentric circles comprised of small square indentations, radiating from a central raised pellet. Twenty one horizontal rows of hexagonal indentations cover the upper two thirds of the thimble to form a honeycomb pattern. The size of the indentations becomes gradually larger towards the base, and the pattern finishes with a circumferential groove. The length is 27mm, width 22mm and the weight 4.22g.

A silver thimble, dating from to 1750 - 1900AD. The thimble is flattened probably by a post-depositional event and would have probably originally been domed with slightly flared sides and a rounded top and has the original owners name "Jane Scorefill" engraved around the bottom. The thimble appears to have been drilled although it could be cast, it is often difficult to distinguish between cast and hammered thimbles. A series of closely and unevenly set sub-circular dents cover the sides. The drilled pits begin at the top and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular …

Post Medieval to Modern lead alloy palm guard. It is shield shaped in plan, and plano-convex in section and profile. The convex section would be placed in the hollow of the artisan's hand and the flat side would have been used for either applying pressure, or having pressure applied to it. In this case a series of groups of shallow linear incisions suggest it was used in the cutting of something, possibly leather or heavy cloth. Dates to between c1600 and c1980 AD, probably from c1850 on due to patina and colouration of the lead alloy. Length 65mm, width 42mm, thickness …
