Cast cu-alloy 'gentleman's' button with moulded decoration on the obverse displaying the motif of a four-petalled flower and central knop. While two of the flower's 'petals' were filled with light blue enamel, the other two were filled with dark blue enamel. Documentary evidence from c. 1652 suggests this sort of enamelled button was priced at twopence a pair -significantly more than most other ones, but hardly out of reach of most people. Cast cu-alloy 'gentleman's button' with blue and white enamelled decoration date from around the reigns of Charles I (1625-49) and Charles II (1660…

Large pewter button, complete, dating from the early modern period. The decoration was based on a late medieval or early post-medieval Bohemian 'Thaler' dating from c. 1526/27. It was of the Countship of Schlick, minted before 1526 in Joachimsthal. The die cutter may have been Melshior Peuerlein(?). The original coin was silver and c. 42mm in diameter, weighing 29.11g. The obverse reads (and so does the button): S-TE&FRA COM D B-AR DOMI SLI (the button reads 'SLI' which is probably an error). The obverse description is three-quarter figure of St Joachim above a shield; left and right i…
