Fragment of a copper alloy 'Mullen Mouth' bit originally with fittings for double reins. It dates from the post-medieval period, c. 16th-17th century. A more complete bit was recorded under GAT-69E26C. Here, the bit has been subsequently modified by removing two of the loops to use as a single rein bit. The central part of the bit is twisted to form a decorative design and to provide additional strength to the bit. There is evidence of how the loops were formed remaining on the loops of the bit. The wear on the lower part suggests that the sawn off part was where a curb chain fitted.
