Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead decorative object, possibly a mount in the form of a skeleton. It has cast decoration on both sides and appears complete. One side is more worn than the other and so the decoration is not as clear. The object has a central motif of a skeleton with arms raised up to horizontal. The head is above the edge of the object and so sticks out. There are 4 circular holes, one below each arm and also 2 where the feet should be. The use of skeletons as a motif is most common around the 17/18th centuries. For example they are often used on 17th and 18th century mourning rings.

A cast lead weight or possibly a seal, probably of Post Medieval date from the 17th–19th century AD. The circular disc has a possible privy mark in the centre of one face. The reverse has a privy mark with a beaded border and looks like it originally had a lettering in it now illegible. A privy mark was originally a small mark or differentiation in the design of a coin for the purpose of identifying the mint, moneyer, or some other aspect of the coin's production or origin, for control purposes. The obverse has a central motiff of a flower possibly a rose. The diameter of the stamp i…

This object is probably a cast lead token. The earlier tokens were made from pewter but the lead tokens are normally associated with the 17th – 18th centuries. The exact purpose has not been ascertained but it seems most likely that they were used by the working class as a form of low denomination currency as they were made at a time when small change was in short supply. The lead tokens seem to be mainly associated with rural areas. They were often used as a gap filler when when copper and brass tokens ceased to be produced in 1672. Landowners often found lead tokens a useful way to…

A cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '1/2lb'. It is very similar to a lead weight recorded under LANCUM-1440E4. Dimensions: Diameter: 47mm, thickness: 4mm and weight: 82.74g.

Cast lead Post Medieval weight. The object is sub-triangular in plan with the narrowed end being the top which has a circular perforation used for attachment. It has a rectangular cross-section throughout. The surface is uneven. Regular diagonal grooves have been cut into one face and both edges of the object. The opposite face has more irregular scratches or grooves. This sort of weight could have been used for many purposes for many periods and so is difficult to date precisely when found out of context. A similar example which can be found on the database is LVPL-AD20B5.

Four disc lead seal, traces of gilding. One of the main discs has a wheel-like device with a crown and a series of initials between the spokes - H A e Ca [R]. The other main disc has suffered more corrosion but shows a shield and probably a version of the company's heraldry - the arms of England and Scotland joined together and with a fish to the right at the top, all over a large globe.

Unidentified lead fragment. Original identification suggested the object may have been a fragment of a printing block, however, there is a slight curve to the decorated side which would suggest otherwise. Possibly a fragment of lead mould for a pottery vessel. The decoration shows a lined edge with two curved lines and a possible leaf/flower pattern inside.
