Lithic implement, probably a knife or scraper. It was knapped from light grey speckled flint and is hardly patinated. The dorsal face shows several large facets while the ventral face shows numerous waves/ripples. There are retouch marks forming a very ragged edge all around the edges on both the ventral and dorsal faces, although they are slightly more pronounced on the dorsal face.

Complete 'D' shaped scraper knapped from grey black flint and dating from the late Neolithic period 2500-2100BC, possibly a Riley Type 5 (Bond, C. Plate 5.112 and 5.113). The scraper is complete, made from a short, round flake with retouch along the total distal and halfway up the two mesial edges. Both the ventral and dorsal faces are very smooth with even ripple marks. Scrapers could have many uses from scraping the fat off animal skins, to scraping the bark off arrow shafts. The length is 42mm, width 34mm, thickness 6mm and the weight is 14.21g.

The surface reveals traces of weathering but this would be consistent with the original working of the weathered face for extraction. There are sources of black chert in the South Pennines. Very small stone axe, probably dating from the Late Neolithic period, i.e. c. 2500-2100 BC. The axe is knapped from a dark grey buff (probably) volcanic tuff or possibly a softer material, i.e. sandstone. The axe is roughly triangular in shape with a straight and unworked blade (although that is difficult to determine because the surface is very worn) and long, shaped side facets. All surfaces are very worn and it is difficult to ascertain what wear marks are older and which are more recent. The material seems quite soft and (possibly) unusual for making a stone axe since even narrower…

Small piece of worked flint, very probably a small piece of debitage dating from the late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, i.e. 2500-1500BC, possibly earlier (exact dating of stray finds of flint debitage is very difficult). The piece is small and can be compared to pieces of flint and chert debitage from Anglezarke Moor in Lancashire which was a well-known seasonal flint-working site throughout the Stone and Bronze Age. This flint is of white colour and it is not opaque or translucent. The white colour either suggests that the waste flake either suffered from extreme heat at some point…
