Cast copper alloy unlooped palstave axe probably dating to the Middle Bronze Age palstave 1300 to 1150BC. The axe is of unusual form and shares similarities with the Taunton metalwork assemblage and Hotham related to the palstaves of the Acton Park metalwork assemblage to which it bears some resemblance similar to Needham et al fig 140 (1985) and Read (1995: p.3 fig 9 )dated 1200BC. The axe is almost complete and is comparatively short with a length of only 125mm. The butt is slightly concave and has a width of 25mm. The flanges are flat, straight and parallel as far as the stop, with…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Bronze Age copper alloy chisel probably a broken tang. The object is flat and rectangular in plan. The upper end has suffered an old break and is very worn. The fragment is ovoid in section towards the break and expands slightly in width at the centre. From this expansion, the lower section is triangular in section and tapers to a point which is rounded in plan. The sides of the lower section are slightly thicker than the flattened central area, possibly indicating that the edges had raised sides which are now worn to almost the same thickness as the re…

Small piece of medium hard black stone, possibly jet or a Scottish pitch. It leaves a black mark when drawn across paper. There is a series of three parallel lines on one face, there is a chance that these may be artificial. A small piece of possible jet/shale debitage (LANCUM 585BA4) was found next to this jet/pitch. These may have come from a burial unearthed in the near vicinity in the antiquarian period. Measures 18x13x10mm. Dates between c2500BC & c800BC.

Small piece of abraded possible Bronze Age jet or shale debitage. Less than 0.1grm in weight. The stone leaves a medium brown mark when drawn across paper. The dorsal surface has a triangular flake off from the proximal end, and another down one edge that runs to the distal. The other edge seems to have had two flakes struck off it. There appears to have been at least two flakes struck off the distal end, producing a point. A small piece of medium hard black stone (LANCUM 57D5A1), possibly jet or a Scottish pitch was found next to this chert. These may have come from a burial unearthe…

A complete cast copper alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1000 - 800 BC). The object can be classified as the Ewart Park phase of metalwork. The object is sub-rectangular in plan with the cutting edge expanding outwards to form a convex cutting edge. The socket has a sub square mouth, is deep and the insides are smooth. A moulded collar decorates the axe below the mouth on each face. Extending down from this are three raised ribs. The ribs have been abraded and damaged in recent times. The front and back faces of the axe are faceted at the socket end. Alon…

An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger dating from the Early Bronze Age, c.2150-c.1500BC. The object is a butt riveted small blade dagger or knife with triangular blade. The blade would have been attached to the hilt by means of three large rivets, the top side one is still in place. The rivet is circular in cross-section and flat-hourglass-shaped in plan. The other two are missing and the other rivet holes are incomplete due to breaks or possibly corrosion. The object is quite damaged so it is difficult to ascertain the exact type, but it is similar to Needham's series 2 (id 1200 Car…

An Early Bronze Age III - Middle Bronze Age I (1800-1500 BC) flanged axe head or axe shaped ingot, possibly water rolled, and unusual in its crudeness. Its uneven shape makes accurate measurement and labelling of areas difficult, but the thickest section is approximately 14mm at its widest pont, and the blade tip is an uneven 2-4 mm in fluctuation. The surface is pitted and appears to have delaminated; areas show different levels and kinds of corrosion, varying from predictable greens to a blueish tinge. The rear of the object is not bilaterally symmetrical but has a thumbprint-s…

Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age agate D shaped 'thumbnail' scraper. The scraper is sub square in plan and fabricated on a tertiary flake of orange agate with transparent banding. There is no noticeable patination. Retouched on most edges. Very few worked agate tools have been discovered on the western side of the Pennines. The scraper, or possibly the raw stone as either a core or nodule, probably originated in Northumberland where agate is more widely utilised to fabricate lithic utensils. It could be seen as a proof of cross Pennine trade. Dates to between c2700 and c1600 BC. …

Late Neolithic to Early Iron Age chert burin. It has been formed on a secondary piece of black 'Marles' chert, probably a worked out core. The retained limestone cortex on the proximal end exhibits quite a high degree of wear, and there is wear gloss on most of the chert. There is sub-parallel, semi-short, abrupt retouch to the shorter of the tool's mesals. This is probably to make the toll more ergonomic but would also have created a small but functional side scraper. The shoulder of this mesal has been reduced with a series of removals at its distal end. The longer mesal has short, …

Cast copper-alloy long flanged axehead of Arreton Tye dating to the Early Bronze Age, c. 1800-1700 BC. The axehead has a rounded arched butt and slightly diverging sides that abruptly expand to a broad crescentic blade and cutting edge, with the blade tips at right angles to the sides; but not recuriving. Cast flanges extent along the sides, rising very gradually from the butt towards the middle of the axe and sloping down again to the blade expansion. This gives the axe a very shallow lenticular side profile. The flanges are slightly triple-faceted, so are slightly angled inwar…

Probably an incomplete Middle Bronze Age or early Late Bronze Age dagger or dirk (probably the former). It is plain and in fair condition with a smooth patina and only some evidence for corrosion and bronze disease. The hilt section is incomplete but it was likely that the organic holt was attached with two (or potentially four) rivets, now missing. There was a slightly raised mid-rib and the edges re bevelled, giving the blade a flat-lozenge cross-section. The section immediately past the hilt section does not draw in, so the identification as a dagger appears more likely. However, a…
