Late Bronze Age socketed axe of 'Yorkshire' Type. The axe has one large mouth moulding, the socketed being of rectangular shape, aligned with the short blade. Both faces are decorated with three narrow, short ribs, all of which 'hang' from a similarly narrow lower mouth moulding/horizontal rib. The loop is small and not splayed and the sides of the axe almost parallel, terminating in an almost straight blades which shows resharpening marks and signs of wear, prehistoric as well as more recent. Today the blade is blunt and slightly flaky around the edges. The casting seams are not promi…

Cast cu-alloy socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, i.e. c. 1000-800BC. The axe is complete and in very good condition with a chocolate-brown patina and a smooth surface. There is only some bronze disease on the inside of the socket. An area of corrosion mixed with soil is on the inside of the socket: it cannot be removed. The axe has a small loop at one side. It is roughly circular in cross-section with three facets on each face. The two outer facets have also facets, but they are less pronounced. Other than that there is no further decoration except for a long collar. The bl…

Cast copper alloy socketed tool, probably an axe, dating from the later Middle Bronze Age or the Late Bronze Age, c. 1300-800BC. The object is the lower half of a socketed copper alloy tool, possibly a socketed axe or another socketed bladed tool. The cross-section is rectangular and the walls are very thick. The sides of the implements are almost parallel and the blade very narrow. The only socketed axe type that would match this shape is Type Taunton-Hardemarschen, but this is a very southern English type and therefore unlikely. NB: the artefact was not seen by the FLO in perso…

Badly damaged socketed copper-alloy axe dating from the Late Bronze Age. It is difficult to judge from the photograph, but the axe seems plain or might possibly have a long thin rib in the centre of each face. The loop and mouth moulding are damaged/missing and there is a long tear in the side opposite the loop. Judging from the picture this is either a long narrow variant of a Yorkshire three-ribbed axe or a variant of Type Everthorpe, both of which are socketed axe types of the Ewart Park metalwork assemblage of Late Bronze Age Britain. Find not seen by FLO; photograph of find kindl…

Copper-alloy socketed looped axehead of Irish Late Bronze Age Type. Due to the short, stocky body of axes of this type, they is referred to as 'bag-shaped' or 'purse-shaped'. The axe's exact measurements are: 57mm in length, the blade width is 43mm, the width of the socket is 31-37mm (inner-outer), the breadth of the socket is 22-27mm (inner-outer, back-front) and the axe weighs 78.97g. These measurements show that the mouth of the axe is aligned with the blade and not back-to-front shaped. The blade was re-worked after the casting process and it is still slightly splayed. However, …

A complete late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe with a large single loop on one side. It has some wear and damage on the cutting edge, but otherwise the surface condition is good. The socket is square although irregular, and also contains a bronze gouge wedged inside it. The loop has a lozenge-shaped section and extends directly below the single mouth moulding. The sides curve gently to a slightly expanded blade, which has a curved cutting edge. Casting seams are present on both sides of the axe. There are hammer marks close to the cutting edge. The width at the socket is 48 mm, …

Cast copper alloy socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. The axe is complete and in good condition except for the missing loop and misshaped mouth which are, however, casting flaws and not signs of prehistoric damage. The exception is the tear in the side wall which may have happened when the handle was inserted and the implement was used. It looks as if it has been used: the casting seams are smooth and the blade was shaped and sharpened. The blade is crescent-shaped with neat corners. The patina is brown/orange with a smooth surface. The axe is undecora…

Lower body and blade fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axes dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. Type undeterminable but possibly Everthorpe or plain South Eastern type. Only the lower half of the body and the blade survive; the surface is very worn. The object has a dark brown/greenish patina and is smooth. There are no obvious resharpening marks or signs of wear on the surface of the blade, but the blade was reworked into a curved shape with blunt edges. The casting seams were smoothed down and are now nearly unrecognisable. There are no hafting ribs on the…

Cast copper alloy (bronze) socketed axe of Late Bronze Age dating (1000BC to 700 BC). The axe is sub-rectangular in shape with a flared convex cutting edge and the socket is sub square in cross section. There is no collar or loop but the axe is broken so the loop maybe missing. The casting seams are not visible which may mean they have been removed or they may be hidden by corrosion. The length is 75mm, the width is 32mm, thickness 23mm, length of blade 45mm, width of blade 5mm and the weight 104.76g. Similar on the database to DENO-2EE993, WMID-E6E666 and LVPL-92B6A6

Late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed looped tool, probably an axehead or chisel. The object is not of robust construction and may well have been designed for some lighter task such as trimming, as opposed to felling. The only decoration is a 2mm wide transverse raised collar 17mm from the socketed end. The mouth of the socket is sub-circular and the internal diameter is 22mm. Loop length 20mm externally, 7.9mm internally. Ewart Park phase attribution so dates to between c900 to c750 BC. Length 95mm, width 46mm, thickness 27mm, and weight 91.85g. The axe is similar, but of a mor…

A small fragment of a copper alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1100 - 750 BC) most probably from a three ribbed axehead produced during the Ewart Park phase / industry of metalwork. The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and curved in profile; the fragment is from the upper corner / mouth of an axe. Only one exterior face of the socket remains; the loop, lower socket and blade are missing due to old patinated breaks. The mouth of the object is rough and uneven; the fragment does not include any of the casting runners. Beneath the mouth the socket flares to form a relatively…

Cast cu-alloy socketed axe fragment dating from the Late Bronze Age, i.e. c. 1000-800BC. The axe fragment is that of the lower part of the axe with blade and part of the socket. The mouth, mouth moulding and side loop are missing. There is an inner hafting rib on one side and it would have had another one on the other side. The axe was decorated on both faces with three thin ribs and it is very likely that it s a Yorkshire Type axe, belonging to the LBA Ewart Park metalwork assemblage.

A fragment of a copper-ally socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date 1150 - 800BC. The piece represents the bottom part of the axe. There is a slight increase in width towards the blade, but the axehead is of slender appearance. The patination of the break suggests that the damage occurred in antiquity. An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead dating to the Late Bronze Age This remaining fragment is rectangular in plan with a triangular side section. It is hollow. The sides are parallel. It is broken near to the blade and therefore no details remain of any ribs, flanges or other features.  The surface is red-brown in colour where the original surface remains (about 30%) but rough green and brown where damage has removed this. The lack of surface detail and side loop make definitive identification difficult. However, given the form of the sides the axehead …
