Post Medieval to Modern copper alloy, possibly brass, probable cannon shaped whistle. It could possibly be a toy cannon with a terminal touch hole rather then the more usual position atop the breech. In addition to its manufactured decoration it has the initials A L or G scratched onto near the breech. Probably dates to between c1750 and c1970 AD. The material and level of finish suggests the latter half of the age range.
The length is 46mm, width 14mm, diameter 10mm, and the weight is 13.94g.

A copper alloy tapered tube whistle of the 19th century. This style of whistle is also known as a Beaufort whistle. The main body of the whistle consists of a tapered copper alloy tube with sound holes on opposite sides towards the narrow end. The cap has some moulded decoration around the top of a raised rim and a (damaged) suspension loop attached directly to the centre of the cap, without a knop. Dating from around 1800 onwards, many of these whistles - particularly those used by police forces - were replaced by the 'Metropolitan' style whistle by around 1880. It has a greenish pat…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other. The decoration on both sides is very similar.
It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

Large cast cu-alloy weight dating from the early modern period, i.e. c. AD1700-1900. The weight is circular without any decoration. Usually, this type of weight would have had official stamps in the centre of the obverse ring, but there do not seem to be any. This suggests that this weight dates from the late 19th or even early 20th century when these 'nests' of weights (which this weight belongs to) were very common. It weighs almost 100g which could suggest that it is a metric weight.

Unusual lead weight in appearance it looks like a steelyard weight which are usually cast in lead. Steelyards of different sizes have been used to weigh loads ranging from ounces to tons. A small steelyard could be a foot or less in length and thus conveniently used as a portable device that merchants and traders could use to weigh small ounce-sized items of merchandise. In other cases a steelyard could be several feet long and used to weigh sacks of flour and other commodities. Even larger steelyards were three stories tall and used to weigh fully laden horse drawn carts.

Cast lead Post Medieval weight.
The object is sub-triangular in plan with the narrowed end being the top which has a circular perforation used for attachment. It has a rectangular cross-section throughout. The surface is uneven. Regular diagonal grooves have been cut into one face and both edges of the object. The opposite face has more irregular scratches or grooves.
This sort of weight could have been used for many purposes for many periods and so is difficult to date precisely when found out of context.

A circular lead item, possibly a spindle whorl. The lead weight is very crude and plano-convex in form, with an irregularly flat base and a slightly rounded top. It is decorated on both sides with a crude pattern of lines and dots. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). It therefore seems likely that this heavy example was used for spinning wool. The dating of un…

Very heavy ball-shaped cast lead weight with two deep grooves around it, the grooves crossing twice.
The exact identification of lead weights can be difficult for they usually lack any official markings or numbers. It seems that this is household lead weight that was tied into netting, e.g. a fisherman's or hunter's net, in order to weigh it down. The deep grooves would certainly facilitate the attachement of a string or thin rope.

Lead weights like these are common finds and it has been noted that (if it is a spindle whorl), the weight of the spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5g) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35g) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, 184). This example weighs 31.72g, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such …

Lead trade weight with the figure '1' imprinted on the obverse, probably indicating the weight. Since it was made from lead and does not show any 'offical markings' like a crown or the coat of arms of London, it is probably weight used by a trader or farmer (?). One could imagine that it was part of a set of several weights, the others weighing 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 2/1 etc. Like the more common brass or cu-alloy alloy weights of this type, they could have been stored in a stack, a smaller weight fitting into the rim of the next heavier one.

Very crude Late Medieval or Post Medieval lead weight with a moulded crucifix on the obverse. It was probably homemade and meant for inofficial use or else, it could have been meant as a talisman, protective- or good-luck-charm since it displayed the sign of the cross.

Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights.
Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.

A lead weight spindle whorl (or possibly net sinker or trap weight) of conical shape. The spindle whorl is 29mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. If decorated, the decoration is hard to make out: it probably consisted of random lines in relief on the diagonal surface.
This example weighs 41.47 grams…

Cast lead shield-shaped weight. Poorly cast with pitting and uneven shape. Scored border around the two curved sides, scored line around the tip. There was probably no design in the raised central field. Probably medieval c.1200-1500, but possibly dating up to the 18/19th century.

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 26mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 7mm in diameter. While one side of the whorl is decorated with groups of two or three dots set apart by lines in relief, the other is decoration with a criss/cross of lines making up several overlaying star shapes, formed around the perforation.
It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Mar…

Small, flat lead weight (net sinker or trap weight) or spindle whorl. The surface is very smooth and worn; the decoration, if any, hardly recognisable.
This example weighs 10.66 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material such as cotton. The dating of unstratified spindle whorls is very diffic…

This example weighs 17.74 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a material of medium weight such as thin wool. The dating of unstratified spindle whorls is very difficult. However, Egan (1998, page 256) has argued that there was an apparent lack of i…
