A circular copper alloy medieval coin weight for the parisis or double royal gold coins of Philippe VI of France, dating to 1293-1350. The obverse face depicts the king, crowned and seated, holding a raised sword in his right hand with his left hand resting on a shield of France (three lis).
Dimensions: Diameter 15.3m; thickness 2.4mm; weight 3.2g
A similar design is illustrated in Withers (2011: 28), for a coin weight of the double royal of Philippe VI of France (1328-1350), which was issued in 1340 and weighed 6.8 g, but some coin weights for the earlier coin, the pa…

A copper alloy possible polyhedral weight. It is basically a cylindrical shape but is faceted unevenly on all sides. Half of the faces have a pattern of parallel lines on them. Overall it has an even white patina, and is thus probably mainly made of lead alloy. The weight fits neither the Scandinavian nor Dublin Viking unit weight systems. Similar shaped weights have been found at various sites of the Viking Great Army camps, see Hadley and Richards (2021) and British Museum accession number 2006.1203.104, dated to 9th century AD. Such shapes are also seen…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy collared pin head. The head is basically of the globular headed type as defined by Haldenby, although it has longitudinal facets on the lower half of the sphere. The top is also has a flat face and there may have been some faceting on the top half of the head but this is not certain. Haldenby states that the examples he examined came from the east of England (Yorkshire) and are later in the series which is dated to the 9th century AD
Dimensions: It is 14mm long, the head is 10mm in diameter and weighs 3.48g

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An early medieval copper alloy strap end. It is sub rectangular, curving towards the top to form a point. There is a plain frame around the edge, and inside this there is a design comprised of two elements. At the bottom is a circle enclosing a saltire, the two upper arms of the saltire extend beyond the circle to form an interlocked knot design. This is all surrounded by a border which emanates from the upper design. There is a raised dot at the point, which may have represented an eye. There are two holes, one above the saltire and one in the border on the right hand side.&…

A Bronze Age flat axe head. It is a trapezoidal in shape, widening towards the blade end. The blade is curved. There is no apparent stop feature. The side profile is slightly lenticular, with bevelled edges, which probably assigns this to Needhams Class 2. Further, the gently curved sides may suggest that it is Sub-class 2C. A lead alloy conical weight or gaming piece. It is of the form of a truncated cone, with curved sides giving the appearance of a bun. There is a central, vertical oval hole, of maximum diameter 6.5mm. The bottom of the weight has an indented circular line around the hole which appears to be a feature of the mould. The weight is just under a multiple of 12 of the standard Dublin weight system of 4.43g, but with a margin of error. Such weights are numerous on the Viking site at Torksey, Lincolnshire (Hadley and Richards, 2016, Figure 1).

Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total, the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this.

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the arc shaped flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but has the appearance of having been cut in half at across the thicker centre, wider because because of the circular plate from which it is made. It has an even, light brown patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time and are difficult to date. For example, LANCUM-4FF9DB is…
