A lead alloy bucket. It has a circular base and probably conical sides, widening at the mouth of the bucket, however this is not certain as it has been crushed or possibly folded in on two sides. Object type: CHAIN
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small chain comprising two silver links. Both links are square in plan. One is a slight D section, and plain, and both ends have been cut unevenly. It may be that this is not a link but a remnant of silver which has been bent into shape to loop with the other. The second link is joined and it is difficult to see where this join is, which makes the first link all the more likely not to be part of the original chain. This second link is highly decorated, with a wave and dot pattern on a background of parallel lines, running perpendicular to the edges of the link. This link has wea…

A lead alloy cup of uncertain function. It is circular with a slightly rounded base, with reasonably thin walls. The rim is slightly everted. One side has a split extending most of the way from the rim to the base. There is no material in it which probably suggests that it was a cup rather then a crucible, although some items like this have been listed on the database as bird feeders, see for example https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1047543. As no function is identified, a wide date range has been allocated. Dimensions: It is 45mm diameter at the top&nb…

A lead alloy artefact which may be a part formed spindle whorl or gaming piece. It is circular with a central hole. One side is flat with a central depression running around it, leaving the inner and outer edges raised. The other side has three 'globules' raised above the base, leaving one flat area, the globules and flat part all covering approximately a quarter of the diameter. It has an even brown patina. While the shape and central hole are characteristics of spindle whorls, they are also found on Viking lead alloy turreted gaming pieces. As it is a miscast p…

An incomplete copper alloy rowel spur dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1450-1550). The object consists of the back end of the spur; it is curved and the sides are incomplete. Dimensions: Length 58.7mm; width 58.8mm; thickness 3.2mm; weight 15.1g Ellis (2002) notes that rowell spurs largely replaced prick spurs in Western Europe from the 14th century onwards, however most examp…

An iron token or weight which has possibly been converted to a gaming piece. If formerly a weight it would approximate to 1/2 ounce, but account must be taken of metal lost through corrosion. It is badly corroded but on both sides a symbol has been scratched into the surface post manufacture, which consists of two triangles joined in line with each other at the point. A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. It is exceptionally large and heavy…

A probable copper alloy strap end. It has a square body, which is split into two pieces to accomodate the strap. Formed as one part, the end of the piece has a decoration with two horizontal arms, as wide as the body, and a third protrusion vertically up from the centre of these arms, forming a cross head shape. The arms are all rounded at the end. Between the split portion are iron remains, and possibly some other, organic remains. It is probably incomplete as the rivet fixing is not present, and the end is an an angle, possibly where it has been cut off. A similar object is LIN-…
