A lead alloy cup of uncertain function. It is circular with a slightly rounded base, with reasonably thin walls. The rim is slightly everted. One side has a split extending most of the way from the rim to the base. There is no material in it which probably suggests that it was a cup rather then a crucible, although some items like this have been listed on the database as bird feeders, see for example https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1047543. As no function is identified, a wide date range has been allocated. Dimensions: It is 45mm diameter at the top&nb…

Probable copper alloy Roman patera dish. It is in two pieces which do join but wear on the faces would suggest that they have been separate for many years - they were approximately 50m from each other in one field. They are heavily patinated with some corrosion and the pattern that would have been on the inside is now largely obscured by this. There is a decoration of concentric circles in the inside of the base, and around top of the outside of the rim there has been a line of decoration with short lines dropping from this at intervals. An abraded sherd of glass water worn, probably from a large vessel. The fragment is of a clear transparent glass with a slight yellowish-green tint to the glass. Air bubbles are present in the matrix. It is sub-rounded in plan. The fragment could be Roman but is impossible to date in it's current state as it could just as easily be post-medieval. The length is 52mm, the width is 48mm and the weight 18.67g. Roman glass fragments tended to be recycled in antiquity. It was considered to be a more higher status artefact, similar in level to imported Samian ware pottery.

Ceramic building materiel in the form of a brick dating to the post-medieval period 1485-1603AD. The brick is rectangular with no frogging, vitrified and probably made in an outdoor kiln. The brick is water worn as it was found in a river. Tudor bricks were irregular in size and shape and therefore thick (15-25mm) mortar joints were necessary to even these out. The slow setting mortar was of matured non-hydraulic lime (often containing particles of the fuel used in its production), and coarse sand in a ratio varying from 1:2-1:5, the joints being finished flush from the laying trowel.…

Copper alloy dog's head of a dog's headed spout dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, c. 1400-1550. The spout fragment probably comes of a ewer. The dog's head is formed of moulded decoration, and has large pointed-oval rounded ears, a squared brow and eyes. The decoration is worn. A similar fixed spout from a pedestal-base ewer can be found illustrated in Lewis (1987, 4-5; fig. 8a). A complete one is recorded under, e.g. BUC-0F3C19.

Rhomboid repair patch/clip from a medieval post-medieval vessel, probably dating from 14th-17th century AD. The clip is made from copper alloy and fairly sturdy. It has been folded over four times to seal the tear in the vessel - then it was hammered flat on the outside with the two ends being folded back on themselves on the inside. Due to its size and sturdiness this is likely to date to the medieval or post-medieval period, but some are earlier, such as examples from Late Saxon contexts at Flixborough (Rogers, N. in Evans and Loveluck 2009, 115-7).

A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy zoomorphic terminal collar from a right-angled drop handle (1300-1500). This collar, one of a pair, would have fitted over the terminal end of a handle and would have been secured by the handle being burred over. The collar, hollow and oval in cross-section, is flat at both ends. It is in the form of a beast's head, probably that of a dog. The forward facing head has a circular hole for a mouth and incised lines delineating the eyes, nose and eyebrows. Each moulded ear is similar and are pointed oval. Copper alloy vessel rim sherd. Though the patina appears Roman the rim form is more suggestive of a cauldron of the medieval to post medieval period and as such is tentatively dated to between c1400 and c1700 AD, but could date to any time from c43 to c1700 AD. The inside has been kept well polished but the exterior is sooted. The thin walls (c3mm) and the two rivets (from either a repair or possibly a mount or handle) also suggest this sherd comes from a valued and long lived vessel. The length is 78mm, width 53mm, wall thickness 3mm, and the weight 82.17g. Similar records on t…
