The reverse reads "The Golden Teapot is near the Castle Inn Market place Preston 1850". This is an early coin-like advertisement. It shows evidence of re-use having been pierced near the rim. Throughout the nineteenth century, advertising was used by British shopkeepers and traders to make their businesses known to customers. Using copper tokens was one way of promoting a trader's name and the goods he sold.…

Lead alloy Post Medieval cast lead circular uniface token, c. 1550-1800 AD. The token has been cast with a raised design decorated with a series of raised lines. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date (1250-1800 AD). The token shares similarities with SUR-42A6E8, PUBLIC-FD45D1, WILT-F28092 and PUBLIC-479A62. The diameter is 17mm.

Cast lead alloy token dating from the medieval or post-medieval, possibly the 15th-17th century AD. It is a circular uniface lead token with a plain reverse and a possibly inscribed obverse. The obverse is divided by a long cross into four quarters and there is a symbol or letter in each quarter. Depending on whether the X can be read as the letter X or the initial cross (+), two variants can be suggested: WPAX or +WPA. Prof. Elisabeth Okasha suggests that there are two likely possibilities. Either it reads PX (for PAX 'Peace') and AW (for alpha and omega), or it reads PAX and the …

Perhaps a copper alloy mining token or 'Truck' from the late 18th to early 19th century AD. The diameter is 38mm. The earliest mining related tokens known from the British Isles are those circulated by a handful of colliery owners and coal carriers operating in the mid seventeenth century. Such tokens are recorded from various locations within the traditional coalfield areas of Yorkshire, Lancashire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Cumberland, and Derbyshire. In the period 1787 to 1819 Britain was again to resort to the wide scale use of a commercial token coinage. As they were designe…

A worn copper alloy token probably issued by a merchant. The lettering is still legible and appears to spell the name William Ingham in a legend that runs around the edge. The reverse side is heavily corroded. As had been the case in the mid seventeenth century it was private traders and industrialists who brought about the revival in the use of token coinage in Britain during the late 1780s. The reasons for resorting to a token coinage was again due to a dearth in the circulating levels of regal copper coinage and the lettering suggest a fairly recent date, c. AD 1750-1850. The huge …
