Lead cylindrical spindle whorl of uncertain date (c. 43 - 1800 AD). The object is circular in plan with a central, circular perforation, slightly larger in diameter on one side than the other. The object is D-shaped in section. Damage has been sustained by the object, leaving a rough, irregular area to one side. Otherwise, the object has a smooth, white patina. It is 22.45mm in diameter, 12.14mm in thickness and weighs 35.71g. The diameter of the central perforation is 9.38mm at one end and 7.56mm at the other end. Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date without archaeological co…

Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.

Lead cylindrical spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman or early-medieval (c. AD 43 - 1000). The spindle whorl is crudely shaped: it roughly hexagonal in plan and rectangular in section, with a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 22.35mm in diameter and 9.70mm in thickness. The diameter of the perforation is 9.05mm. It weighs 25.06g. A complete lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 100 BC - AD 410. The object is circular and flat with slightly curved sides. It has a cream pale patina. The central hole is 5.7mm in diameter. It is of Walton Rogers form B2. Dimensions: The whorl is  32.2mm in diameter, 6.5mm thick and weighs 49.5g.  Walton Rogers suggests that Form B2 whorls were used from from Iron Age to Medieval periods, but the size of the central hole makes an Iron Age or Roman date more likely.  For similar objects in PAS see, S…

A cylindrical spindle whorl which is decorated with unevenly distributed sun-rays on one side and a crooked five- or six pointed star on the other, also in relief, formed around the perforation. All of this decoration is visible on both sides of the artefact. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 15.8g, so it seems likely that it would have been u…

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

Late Early Medieval to early Post Medieval cast biconical lead weight. Probably a spindle whorl, loom weight, or net weight. It is circular in plan. It is undecorated. Without further context, is it not possible to closely date this lead weight. Though the colour of the patina suggests a Post Medieval alloy, it could date to anytime between c1000 and c1750 AD. Diameter of 33mm, perforation diameter 12mm. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights."…

Post Medieval cast lead alloy spindle whorl. It has raised decoration on both faces. On the first face this takes the form of three debased letter, possibly THC, with a cross or quatrefoil to the left, and a symbol of the Trinity or trefoil to the right. Between these and opposite the lettering is a stylised heart. On the other face, a W has a pellet surrounded by a border to the left and a stylised clover leaf or trefoil to the right. As with the other face, there is a heart opposite the lettering. The style of the W suggests a Post Medieval date. The combination of letters, probably …

A spindle whorl or possible weight of lead alloy. It has two flat faces, one smaller in diameter than the other, and the sides are curved. The central hole is small at 5m diameter, this may suggest either an early date for this or that is was used as a weight. As earlier whorls are not commonly made form lead alloy, this is probably a weight. Dimensions: 23mm diameter, 9mm deep and the hole is 5mm in diameter. It weights 28.93g
