Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.

A complete lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 100 BC - AD 410. The object is circular and flat with slightly curved sides. It has a cream pale patina. The central hole is 5.7mm in diameter. It is of Walton Rogers form B2. A cylindrical spindle whorl which is decorated with unevenly distributed sun-rays on one side and a crooked five- or six pointed star on the other, also in relief, formed around the perforation. All of this decoration is visible on both sides of the artefact. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). A lead alloy discoidal spindle whorl of probable Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. It fits into Walton Rogers Class B1. It is a flat disc of rectangular cross section (Glenda Type A cited in Alberti 2017). The central aperture is 5.7mm diameter. The edge of the whorl has been distorted in one place. The whorl is 28.9mm diameter, 6.5mm thick and 35.86g. It has a yellow grey patina.

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. Without further context, is it not possible to closely date this lead weight. Though the colour of the patina suggests a Post Medieval alloy, it could date to anytime between c1000 and c1750 AD. On the first face this takes the form of three debased letter, possibly THC, with a cross or quatrefoil to the left, and a symbol of the Trinity or trefoil to the right.
