A lead alloy spindle whorl. It is circular and quite flat on both faces, but with rounded edges. It does not appear to be patterned, and has a brown patina. The small diameter of the central hole may suggest an early date. Dimensions: It is 28mm in diameter and 7mm thick, the central hole is 5mm in diameter and it weighs 27.75g

A lead alloy bi conical spindle whorl. The design on both faces consists of a central circular line crossed by diagonal lines, regularly spaced. In each of the cells formed by these are dots. There is a border around the central hole as well. It has an even white patina. Similar spindle whorls on the PAS database are dated to AD 1100-1500 Dimensions: It is 38mm diameter and itweighs 50g

A probable lead alloy spindle whorl. It is bi-conical in shape but rounded. It is worn but discernible on both sides is a pattern of lines and dots. It has a grey patina, the central hole is either slightly mis-moulded with an inset line on both sides or alternatively has the remains of a concretion in it. The patination (or lack of) would suggest a later date although the hole diameter might suggest an early medieval date. Dimensions: It is 23mm in diameter, 10mm deep and the central hole is 8mm diameter and it weighs 23.00g

A lead alloy bi-conical spindle whorl. The design on one face consists of two concentric circles, one inside the inner edge and one at the outer edge, and from these run a number of lines parallel to the borders, inside each cell formed by these is a dot. The other side also has two borders at the inner and outer diameter and lines running parallel to these to form trapezoid cells but there are more of these, some of which may have dots or further lines in them. It is distorted, one side having been squashed or mis-moulded causing an uneven distribution of material. …

A lead alloy artefact which may be a part formed spindle whorl or gaming piece. It is circular with a central hole. One side is flat with a central depression running around it, leaving the inner and outer edges raised. The other side has three 'globules' raised above the base, leaving one flat area, the globules and flat part all covering approximately a quarter of the diameter. It has an even brown patina. While the shape and central hole are characteristics of spindle whorls, they are also found on Viking lead alloy turreted gaming pieces. As it is a miscast p…

A lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is a truncated cone in shape, both faces are flat, and one side is slightly thicker than the other. The hole is large in comparison to the diameter of the artefact, and this, with the unevenness, suggests that it is likely to be a weight rather then a whorl. Dimensions: 18mm diameter and 6mm deep, the hole is 8mm diameter and it weighs 7.83g

A spindle whorl or possible weight of lead alloy. It has two flat faces, one smaller in diameter than the other, and the sides are curved. The central hole is small at 5m diameter, this may suggest either an early date for this or that is was used as a weight. As earlier whorls are not commonly made form lead alloy, this is probably a weight. Dimensions: 23mm diameter, 9mm deep and the hole is 5mm in diameter. It weights 28.93g

A complete lead alloy spindle whorl or weight dating from the early medieval to the medieval period (c.AD 500-1500). The object is circular in form and flat with a circular perforation in the centre measuring 11.2mm in diameter. Both faces are decorated; one face is slightly recessed and presents a possible pseudo-runic inscription presented as raised lines in seemingly random directions with pellets at the end. The opposite face is also slightly recessed and presents a similar design of raised lines with pellets. The object has a dark cream / grey patina. Dimensions: Diameter 4…

A lead alloy, miscast and therefore unfinished, spindle whorl. One, conical side of the spindle whorl is alomost complete, with a design of concentric circles of dots, and the central hole is moulded cleanly in to a depth. The other side is flat, with a vague suggestion of a line and dot pattern in it. There is no central hole apparent on this side. It may have been destined to have been of Walton-Rogers form C. Off the side of this is a lump of lead from a faulty casting. It is interesting to see a piece as work in progress on a local site. Dimensions (approximate): 28mm diameter and…
