A silver shilling (North number 2231) coin of Charles I, the legend clipped. The initial mark (P) survives and indicates a date of 1643-1644 for minting. Coinage in the period of the English Civil War was issued in multiple locations by many short lived emergency mints, and both set of belligerents issued coins bearing the head of the king. A silver medieval double patard of Charles the Bold double patard minted at Louvain dating to AD 1468-74. The obverse legend is +KAROLVS DEI GRA DVS BG BRAB Z LIMB; shield. Reverse: +SIT nOmEN DOmInI BENEDICTVm AM; cross fluery. Uncertain mint. An agreement under Edward IV in 1469 confirmed the Low Countries coinage of Duke Charles as legal tender in England. In the late 15th and early 16th century, double patards of Charles the Bold were a part of the English currency and feature regularly in hoards alongside English groats as well as being recovered as single finds.
