A complete, albeit worn on the obverse, post-medieval, silver hammered groat of Queen Mary (AD 1553-1554). The coin is too worn on the obverse for the privy mark to be made out, but it is likely to be a Pomegranite: see North, 1991, II, p. 126, no. 1960.
Obverse: The coin is worn and there is no visible bust or legend.
Obverse legend: The coin is too worn to read.
Reverse: Squared shield bearing the royal coat of arms quartered by a long cross fourchee.
Reverse inscription: VERITA / S TEM / PORIS / FILIA.

Post Medieval hammered silver coin. Based on the shield, the style of the lettering and stops, it is probably a Mary I groat prior to her marriage to Philip of Spain. Dates to between 1553 and 1554 AD. The reverse initial mark would have been a pomegranate. Obverse legend would have read as MARIA D G ANG FRA Z HIB REGINA. Reverse legend would have read as VERITAS TEMPORIS FILIA.
The diameter is 23mm and the weight is 0.94g.

I have examined 13 early post-medieval coins reported found in the Lancaster Area of Lancashire. They are official English silver coins, and will thus have a silver content of 92.5% fine metal - the sterling standard.
