A copper alloy, hooked strap fitting; an S shaped belt fastener of Post Medieval date, AD 1575 - 1900. It is S shaped and zoomorphic, having the head of a snake at each end. At one end the front of the zoomorphic head touches the central part of the body though this is possibly the result of corrosion products. Both sides of the fitting are decorated with moulded scales in low relief. The length is 41mm, the width is 23mm. Similar examples are illustrated in Gordon Bailey's Detector Finds 3 (1997), pages 20-21. Bailey states that the 'snake form belt hooks' became popular during th…

Cast copper alloy post-medieval (Georgian) sub-rectangular shoe buckle with rounded ends and a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The loop chape with two internal spikes and the pitchfork tongue is present. Shoe buckles increased in size after 1720 and after 1770 the fixing arrangements became more elaborate with a double looped chape, therefore it is probable that this example dates between 1720 and 1770. The length is 50mm, the width is 53mm and the weight 26.89g.

A corroded iron buckle frame of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date 1500 - 1800AD. It is square in form and section, badly corroded and the pin is broken and projecting. Similar to SF-418B75. This buckle frame is similar to late Medieval and Post-Medieval examples noted in London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 430; Egan, 2005: no. 98), as well as Post-Medieval examples from Norwich (Margeson, 1993: no. 204). These indicate a possible 15th-17th century AD date for the current example, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely. Egan, G. and Pritchard, F., 1991 Dress Acce…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of Medieval to Post-medieval date (1450-1600). The buckle has a single loop D-shaped frame with the pin missing. Post-Medieval asymmetrical copper alloy shoe buckle. The spindle and most of the anchor chape have survived, but the pin, which was most probably made from iron, has corroded away and there is only some iron residue left around the spindle and between the two attachment tubes of the chape. The exterior face of the frame has been decorated with scrolling, and corner knops at the chape end. The anchor chape is missing its terminal knop and is asymmetric. Boththe chape and spindle are noticeably crudely made, especially when contrasted with the quite intricate decorative work on the fr…
