A section of what is probably a knee or trumpet type early Roman brooch. The head is circular and behind it are the remains of the fixing plate for the spring. This is a raised rectangular section which fills the full diameter of the head and would have extended perhaps 3mm or 4mm upright. From the front of this head a circular section piece extends which has a central rib down the length of it. This curves at approximately 75 degrees, sloping down from the head, then vert…

Lead alloy cast model possibly representing the head and bow of a 'T' shaped or Dolphin Roman brooch at 1:1 scale. As presented, the object lacks mechanical strength and, in this case, a hinged pin or spring to permit the brooch to operate is also absent, along with the catch plate; the top of the bow ending on a plain slightly curved edge. The length is 63mm, the width is 25mm thickness 11mm. First, this may be a trial piece or model of Roman date, or possibly a symbolic replacement for a brooch. The latter is occasionally encountered, though mainly in post-Roman (Anglo-Saxon) buria…

The front of the headplate is decorated with a slightly raised central panel and a pair of wings which slope slightly to their edges, the best-preserved of which is decorated with a border groove. The side knobs are missing but a full-round integrally cast top knob survives, with a base decorated with a fine groove, a broader groove forming the waist, and a dome also decorated with a fine groove. There is a …

Enamelled cast cu-alloy Dragonesque brooch dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch is incomplete with one of the heads of the brooch's body missing as well as the pin. The brooch was cast having small 'cloisonne'-style fields on the obverse whilst the reverse was plain. The obverse fields were filled with different coloured enamel, probably red and blue. They made of a geometrical and floral pattern and there was also enamel on the remaining head of the brooch, especially around the circular 'eye'. The pin would have been a strong cast cu-alloy pin that was 'looped' around the neck…

A complete copper-alloy Roman penannular brooch dating from c. AD43-410. The brooch frame is complete and survives in an excellent condition, with a pitted but high shine patina which has worn under the pin loop, giving it a brassy appearance. Both terminals survive, both culminates in round knops, decorated with incised lines, arranged in a spiral formation. The pin remains intact and is looped around the frame, it has a squared off section and it has a flattened terminal. There is an incised line down the spine of the pin. Incomplete cast copper alloy possible Roman flat edged disc brooch with enamelled decoration. It is round extremely worn and corroded with possibly a pattern in the centre with some red enamel. The reverse of the brooch has an integrally cast catchplate, which is now incomplete and extremely worn. There is a relatively recent break across the surface of the brooch, based on the limited amount of wear this damage is most likely due to agricultural damage. The brooch has a mid green patina. Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. It is a one-piece brooch with bilateral spring and a highly arched bow which is decorated with grooves and a line of dots(?)/small hourglass(?)-shaped stamps on top. The grooved decoration can be found on both sides and the reverse of the bow and it is interesting to note that the upper side of the bow is much more worn than the reverse which would have had more contact with the cloth. Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy Birdlip brooch dating from the mid-1st century BC to mid-1st century AD. Its pin is missing but otherwise it is complete. It has a trumpet-shaped head and moulded decoration on the bow which is very thin towards the head of the brooch. Probably for both decoration and stabilisation purposes, a cast cu-alloy 'ball' was moulded between the rim of the trumpet-shaped head and the heavier top of the bow. 2nd century Romano-British disc brooch with Celtic-inspired triskele design (comp. Hattatt 2000, no. 120, p. 344). It was made from cast cu-alloy and decorated with dark blue and white(?) enamel. Part of the spring coil and the catch plate are still in place, but the pin is missing. It is possible that both spring coil and pin were made from iron (as dark red corrosion suggests). The obverse of the brooch is decorated with triskele motif that was filled in with dark blue enamel.
