Copper-alloy, Roman headstud brooch, possibly 3rd century, although heavily corroded. The headstud is pirform shape and integrally cast, and the wings and neckband would have supported a head loop which is recently broken. The brooch would have had a hing pin at the back which has been lost. It has a well arched flat faced bow of heavy construction which tapers towards the catch plate which is missing. The foot of the brooch is rounded at the end, although because it is heavily corroded and most of the foot is missing it is difficult to be sure. There is incised ribbed decoration aroun…

Copper alloy decorative broach, probably dating to the post medieval period. The broach is in the shape of a thisle, with a central point at the top, and two pointed spikes slighly further down at either side. Underneath these spikes at the end of the lozenge shaped body two protruding curved cresent shaped features at either side, which are meant to represent leaves. This leads to the stem which is Z shaped, and narrow. Throughout the body of the broach are round indentations, which would have originally contained semi-precious stones. There is also lines breaking up these round inden…

Fragment of bow and catchplate of a possible Langton Down type brooch. The bow is thin, straight sided and rounded at its end. The front surface is ribbed. The catchplate has two perforations. Unusually, the brooch has been repaired in antiquity in that the worn catchplate has had a plate riveted to it with two copper rivets. It has been cut to the shape of the original catchplate and turned over at its edge to catch the pin.

Possibly a Victorian copper-alloy brooch, pin and spring coils missing. It was possibly worn as a choker on the front part of a high-necked collar (?). The basic shape is that of a Maltese cross; a rectangular-cut gemstone was set in the centre of the brooch, but it is missing today. It was not of very high quality.

2nd century Romano-British disc brooch with Celtic-inspired triskele design (comp. Hattatt 2000, no. 120, p. 344). It was made from cast cu-alloy and decorated with dark blue and white(?) enamel. Part of the spring coil and the catch plate are still in place, but the pin is missing. It is possible that both spring coil and pin were made from iron (as dark red corrosion suggests). The obverse of the brooch is decorated with triskele motif that was filled in with dark blue enamel. If the spaces between the three arms of the triskele were, too, filled with enamel, there is almost no more…

Cast copper-alloy Headstud brooch, Hattatt No. 35: Hinged pin type with bronze axis bar but without the for this brooch type typical chain loop. "It does not have any enamel decoration, unless the stud originally held some. The wings are step grooved in the usual Headstud manner", but without the knurling on alternative ribs. The round foot knob is undecorated "It is plain underneath. The stud has a frontal kick and the face of the bow is shaped to a smooth rounded channel from stud to foot. A fairly plain Headstud brooch, but nicely worked. Probably second half of the second century AD.

Cast copper-alloy Roman Trumpet brooch, complete except for the pin. The pin was part of a hinge mechanism and there is no spring coil underneath the plain trumpet-shaped head. The small head stud is plain and the large, heavy bow is decorated with the for this brooch type typical alternating petal/reel mouldings. Furthermore, it seems that at some point, after the foot had broken off it was replaced/repaired with a small metal sheet (probably bronze) which was attached to the remainder of the original foot with two very small rivets which are fragmentary today. Nina Crummy adds: "Trum…

Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy Birdlip brooch dating from the mid-1st century BC to mid-1st century AD. Its pin is missing but otherwise it is complete. It has a trumpet-shaped head and moulded decoration on the bow which is very thin towards the head of the brooch. Probably for both decoration and stabilisation purposes, a cast cu-alloy 'ball' was moulded between the rim of the trumpet-shaped head and the heavier top of the bow. The large foot is undecorated and does not have a headstud.

Rare, complete cast cu-alloy brooch dating from the La Tène period/Late Iron Age (c 4th-3rd centuries BC). It is a one-piece brooch with bilateral spring and a highly arched bow which is decorated with grooves and a line of dots(?)/small hourglass(?)-shaped stamps on top. The grooved decoration can be found on both sides and the reverse of the bow and it is interesting to note that the upper side of the bow is much more worn than the reverse which would have had more contact with the cloth. The uppermost part of the bow is smooth and shiny. Furthermore, the brooch has an extended catc…
