A cast lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Early Medieval to Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1100. The whorl is circular and has two flat faces of different sizes with curved sides, a shape which is classified as Walton Rogers form A2, thought to be in use in AD 600 - 1100. It has a circular central aperture of 9.5mm diameter. This size of spindle hole can suggest a Late Saxon date onwards. There is a depression which runs between the outer edge and the central aperture on one face. The whorl is uneven, being higher on one side than the other. It is undecorated and has a brown…

An early-medieval silver Carolingian denier of Charles the Bald (AD 840-77) or later, monogram/METVLLO type dating from the AD 860s-c.925, mint: Melle, France. Weight 1.52g, Diam 20.9mm, Thickness 1mm. Ref: Coupland 2015: 70, 75.
The coin is in overall good condition but has a small tear at the top of the coin. On the obverse the bottom of this is crescent shaped and possibly slightly lifted from the surface suggesting that this tear resulted from the testing - pecking - of the coin to check its quality. Such pecking is typically related to a Viking bullion economy and would sugg…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl dating from the Early Medieval to the Medieval period, (AD1066-1500). The object is circular in plan and biconical with a large central circular perforation. The internal perforation measures 9.5mm in diameter. One face of the object is decorated with a series of moulded lines which radiate outwards from the perforation. Between each line are two moulded pellets. The opposite face is decorated with runic script.
It is possible that the script is pseudo-runic, and merely intended to imitate a script, as not all letters seem to be genuine Anglo-Saxo…

This report concerns a hoard of Anglo-Saxon silver pennies found on farmland near Preston, Lancs on March 14th, 2010. The coins were discovered by Alan Reynolds, while metal detecting. The precise find-spot is recorded, but it has been agreed that this will only be identified as 'near Preston' for public purposes.
The coins are all of a single type, the CRVX type of Æthelræd II, king of England (978-1016), issued in the 990s. There are three complete coins, substantial fragments of two more, and smaller fragments of a further two. The coins were found in fairly close proximity, w…

A copper alloy sword pommel of Early Medieval date. The object is of late lobed form, probably of 10th or 11th century date. The base, which curves upwards at the ends, would have rested upon a concave pommel bar. The interior of the pommel has an oval opening at the base and converging sides towards the oval aperture at the apex of the pommel which accommodated the protruding sword tang. The perforation at the base has an internal length of 38.67mm and width of 8.74mm. At the top of the object the perforation measures 8.45mm in length and 7.45mm in width. Cast copper-alloy sword pommel of the hollow cast 'lobed' type. It is an elongated oval in plan (i.e. viewed from below) with two opposing faces that are subtriangular. It is semicircular in cross-section. The slot for the handle is oval. It consists of five curved lobes, all of them hollow, increasing in height towards the centre. The central lobe is very much larger than the four side lobes, and has a oval perforation, ca.5/7mm in Length, to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There is some damage around the perforation and some loss of surface. The perforation then flares o…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy knotted finger ring dating from early Medieval-Modern times. It was made from one long square-sectioned wire of cu-alloy which was twisted in itself in places. The decoration on and around the bezel consists of two knots tied into each other and around the hoop with another knot tied around the hoop on either side - thus, four knots in all. The wire was only twisted in the loops of the knots, but not the hoop.
Knotteds finger rings are very difficult to date. Simple examples made from silver have been found in Early Medieval contexts, but this type of ring has been popula…

This report concerns three items found near Carnforth in Lancashire in 2010. The items were found close to the find-spot of a Viking hoard discovered in 1997 (TAR 1998-1999, no. 84), and it was considered possible that the new finds might be stray finds from that hoard.
Two of the finds are undiagnostic. Both appear to be a fairly base silver or lead alloy. One is a slender ingot with a section in the shape of an isosceles triangle with rounded angles, 72 x 8 x 8 mm, weight 39.38g, broken at one end. The form is known in the Viking Age, but it is undiagnostic, as the form is also kn…

Note on discovery: all the small finds, except one coin, were found within a lead container (no. 198 below), at a depth of about 18 inches, while five of the larger, complete arm-rings were found underneath it. The objects are described in their uncleaned condition, in accordance with the terms of the Treasure Act 1996, and some of the details are currently obscured by adhering soil. After conservation, some of the weights may be slightly lighter, although there is unlikely to be any significant difference.
Surface metal analysis of a sample of six objects from the hoard conducted a…

Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Type A (dating from the early medieval period, i.e. the 9th century AD. The strap end is complete except for the very end of the animal-head terminal, which is missing.
The attachment end is shaped into two rounded lobes with a rivet hole in each one. The two small square-headed rivets are still in place, made from a copper alloy which is of a more greenish colour than the rest of the strap-end. Two vertical grooves run between the rivets, which then curve outwards to form the trilobate motif which is standard on this type of strap-end. On this pi…
