A Medieval Iron axehead, dating to c.AD 1000 - 1500.  The axehead has a triangular or 'wedge'- shaped blade with a slight curve to the cutting edge; it projects downwards more than it projects upwards from the central body of the axe. The socket is filled with corrosion but is triangular in shape with a triangular wing surviving on one side, extending downwards.  When viewed from the rear, the butt of the axe appears rectangular. A Post-Medieval iron cannon-ball weighing 989g (34.8 oz), probably dating to c.1550-1850. Spherical, with a visible casting seam. The surface displays a black colour with patches of reddish/orange oxidisation. Diameter 64.5mm, weight 989g. Similar examples on this database at: SWYOR-21FE41, SUR-3212C4 and SUR-2D3E56. There is a possibility that this was once part of an agricultural rotary grinding mill used to crush chalk prior to spreading on farmland.

Two fragments of undated ferrous slag. The fragments are irregularly shaped with a slight patches of vitreous areas. Both frags have some rusty patches, one is much darker than the other perhaps due to increased carbon. Fragment 1: 37.49mm high, 35.39mm wide, 27.46mm thick and 31g in weight Fragment 2: 48.85mm long, 34.45mm wide, 21mm thick and 26.54g in weight. Both frags found in the vicinity of metalworking objects including ingots and crucible.

There is a collar between the bow and the stem and the stem plus collar is 48mm in length. It is impossible to say if the stem is solid or hollow but it tapers slightly from 7.02mm at the base of the collar to 6.05mm thick just before the bit. A complete cast iron blade from a Meading or Hay Knife with a tang for insertion into a wooden handle of Post Medieval to Modern date (c. 1700-1900). Description: This is a rare tool which has gone out of use. The distinctive blade has the sharp edge on the opposite side to, for instance, a scythe and was used to cut hay once it had been stacked and compressed, more like a chopper.
