Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A hoard of five silver-plated copper alloy copies of silver shillings of Edward VI (1547-1553). The coins seem to have been hammered from one pair of dies as they all have the same 't' mintmark for Canterbury on the obverse and the arrow for the year 1549 on the reverse, where there is also the same mistake in the legend which reads TINOR and not TIMOR DOMINI FONS VITE. MDXLIX. Most of the coins seem to be in a relatively good condition apart from coin 3 which has a small fragment missing. (North, 1991: 102), no. 1921. Measurements:   Diameter (mm) …

A pottery barrel costrel of Merida red ware from Spain dating from the 16th century. The costrel is 325 mm long, 245 mm wide and 255 mm in height and at the neck, 8 mm in thickness. The fabric is a hard sandy ware with fine white mica inclusions and is reddish orange fading to pale orange in colour. It may originally have been coated with a thin layer of slip, but prolonged immersion in sea water has eroded the surface which is now coated with thin patches of marine salts and occasional calcified fragments of the tunnels of marine invertebrates. The main body of the vessel is a hollow…

Cast copper alloy 'manilla' in the form of a small penannular arm band or bangle made up of a curved rod, circular in section, with expanded and flattened terminals, that are teardrop-shaped in section. The terminals are 15.3 mm in length and 13.2 mm in width. The manilla is 140 mm in total length, 7 mm in width and 8 mm in thickness and has a diameter of 57.2 mm. Manillas were used as a form of money to trade for slaves on the West African coast from the time of Henry VIII right up until World War II. They are hard to date as they were made in the same way, using the same metals wi…

Cast copper alloy penannular arm band or arm-ring made up of a curved flattened rod, convex in section, with expanded and flattened terminals. The terminals and the band are decorated with punched dots and incised rouletting in radiating lines on the terminals and criss-crossed across the band which makes it appear like rope. The terminals are 25 mm in length and 18.6 mm in width. The manilla is 180 mm in total length, 12.5 mm in width and 5 mm in thickness and has a diameter of 64.4 mm. This arm-ring may have been worn, but it also may have been made from or used as a 'manilla'. Ma…

Copper alloy six deniers piece or dardenne of Louis XIV of France (1661-1715), minted at La Rochelle, a seaport on the Bay of Biscay in western France, between 1710-1712, mis-struck so that is it now off-centre. This type was designed to consume locally mined copper along with scrap bronze and brass from cannons from the naval arsenals in Toulon and Marseilles to pay off soldiers serving there. Obverse description: Central triangle with a pair of lines radiating from each of its sides terminating in crowns. A fleur de lis springs from each corner of triangle. The letter 'H' within …

Seven silver-plated copper alloy copies of silver shillings of Edward VI (1547-1553); the bust is not like either Bust 3 or 4 which should be found on a coin of this date and mint, which suggests an attempt at a forgery, where the face has been carved into the die by hand, so that the cheeks, ear and nose do not resemble the correct busts. The coins seem to have been hammered from two different dies as they all have the same 't' mintmark for Canterbury (Spink 2468, North 1921) on the obverse and the arrow for the year 1549 on the reverse, where there is also the same mistake in the le…

Copper alloy coin, a ceitil (sixth of a real) of John I (1385-1433) of Portugal. The obverse shows the crowned letters 'IhNS' within an octofoil border. The obverse legend reads: ADIVTORIVM:NOSTRVM but half of it is missing. The reverse shows the Portuguese arms, a cross of shields with a castle in each angle. Group of fifty flint implements, thirteen of which are photographed here as the best worked pieces, including a leaf-shaped arrowhead, two gravers, three blades, three notched flakes and four scrapers, all dating from the Neolithic period c.4500-2100 BC. The majority of the group, eighteen, are waterworn waste pieces, or debitage, and there are thirteen worked waterworn flakes and six worked pieces apart from those illustrated here. The flint is mottled light to dark grey in colour with cortex remaining on some pieces, which is typical of the local beach flint found in the area.

Flint discoidal scraper, semi-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The scraper has been unifacially reworked on the right edge of the dorsal face and naturally truncated on the left edge where cortex remains from the original edge of the flint pebble. The ventral face retains the bulb of percussion at the proximal end. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour, made from a local beach pebble, with some of the orignal cortex remaining on the left edge of the dorsal face. The length to breadth ratio is about 6:5. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page …

Machined cornelian intaglio, rectangular in plan and profile, with faceted edges that have been water-worn and rounded, depicting a bearded man facing right with a band across the forehead over neat combed hair. "The rectangular shape and the bevelled edges suggest a neo-classical date, probably 18th century. But without a setting to help it is often impossible to date engraved gems as the techniques used do not change." (Judy Rudoe pers comm)

Shard from a Post-Medieval cylindrical jar made from 'potash glass'. The shard comes from the top of the vessel and includes part of the slightly everted rim and a portion of the body, which curves first outwards and then abruptly downwards indicating that the vessel probably had straight walls (though the lower portion is missing). The original size and form of the vessel is difficult to determine from such a small shard, but it seems likely that it would have had a wide rim and neck and that the complete vessel would have been of a good size. Willmott's (2002, p.97-99) 'Early Pos…
