Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A hoard of five silver-plated copper alloy copies of silver shillings of Edward VI (1547-1553).
The coins seem to have been hammered from one pair of dies as they all have the same 't' mintmark for Canterbury on the obverse and the arrow for the year 1549 on the reverse, where there is also the same mistake in the legend which reads TINOR and not TIMOR DOMINI FONS VITE. MDXLIX. Most of the coins seem to be in a relatively good condition apart from coin 3 which has a small fragment missing.

Object type: COSTREL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A pottery barrel costrel of Merida red ware from Spain dating from the 16th century. The costrel is 325 mm long, 245 mm wide and 255 mm in height and at the neck, 8 mm in thickness. The fabric is a hard sandy ware with fine white mica inclusions and is reddish orange fading to pale orange in colour. It may originally have been coated with a thin layer of slip, but prolonged immersion in sea water has eroded the surface which is now coated with thin patches of marine salts and occasional calcified fragments of the tunnels of marine invertebrates. The main body of the vessel is a hollow…

Penhallurick 2009, 269: "The museum on St Mary's has three sestertii found in a midden layer on the southern shoreline of Tean in 1956. Accompanying pottery indicated an occupation from the first to the fourth centuries and included sherds of samian ware and a bronze brooch (Thomas 1985, p.183)". He notes that the second sestertius of Marcus Aurelius listed here may have been turned into a brooch (bronze adhered to the bottom of the reverse), though this has not been verified.

Copper alloy six deniers piece or dardenne of Louis XIV of France (1661-1715), minted at La Rochelle, a seaport on the Bay of Biscay in western France, between 1710-1712, mis-struck so that is it now off-centre. This type was designed to consume locally mined copper along with scrap bronze and brass from cannons from the naval arsenals in Toulon and Marseilles to pay off soldiers serving there.

Seven silver-plated copper alloy copies of silver shillings of Edward VI (1547-1553); the bust is not like either Bust 3 or 4 which should be found on a coin of this date and mint, which suggests an attempt at a forgery, where the face has been carved into the die by hand, so that the cheeks, ear and nose do not resemble the correct busts. The coins seem to have been hammered from two different dies as they all have the same 't' mintmark for Canterbury (Spink 2468, North 1921) on the obverse and the arrow for the year 1549 on the reverse, where there is also the same mistake in the le…

Group of fifty flint implements, thirteen of which are photographed here as the best worked pieces, including a leaf-shaped arrowhead, two gravers, three blades, three notched flakes and four scrapers, all dating from the Neolithic period c.4500-2100 BC. The majority of the group, eighteen, are waterworn waste pieces, or debitage, and there are thirteen worked waterworn flakes and six worked pieces apart from those illustrated here. The flint is mottled light to dark grey in colour with cortex remaining on some pieces, which is typical of the local beach flint found in the area.

Shard from a Post-Medieval cylindrical jar made from 'potash glass'. The shard comes from the top of the vessel and includes part of the slightly everted rim and a portion of the body, which curves first outwards and then abruptly downwards indicating that the vessel probably had straight walls (though the lower portion is missing). The original size and form of the vessel is difficult to determine from such a small shard, but it seems likely that it would have had a wide rim and neck and that the complete vessel would have been of a good size.
