An incomplete ceramic handle from a Dressel 20 type amphora of Roman date. The handle is of oval section, expanding towards the top. The curvature of the handle is consistent with a 1st century type (see Tyers 1996: 88). The fabric is a light yellowish-pink colour and contains sand temper. Some of the surface has been lost. The fragment measures 155mm long, up to 38.6mm wide and weighs 252.57g. The ovoid Dressel 20 amphora was produced in the Guadalquivir valley, southern Spain, for the transportation of olive oil around the Roman empire.

A rim sherd from a Saxo-Norman domestic vessel of probable 11th century date. The short rim section is roughly vertical and has a convex upper surface. At the bottom of the rim the pot angles outwards at approximately 45 degrees. It is likely that the orginal pot would have been 'bag-shaped'. The fabric is similar in form to Ipswich ware, being light grey in colour with sand temper. The sherd is abraded. It measures 29.1mm long, 22.7mm wide and 7.3mm thick. The weight is 5.92g.

A fragment of a handle from a Roman pottery vessel. The form of this piece strongly suggests that it originates from a Dressel type 20 amphora - a large globular vessel produced in southern Spain (in particular, the Guadalquivir valley) during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, for use in the transportation of olive oil (see P. Tyers; 1996; pp. 87-89). The handle sherd (one of an original two) is fairly rough in appearance, due to having been hand made; it has a shallow curvature and is oval in section. The fabric is light yellowish-brown and heavily sand-tempered. The edges of the piece …

A base sherd from a late Iron Age to early Roman pottery vessel. Similar pottery was found in Belgic layers at Verulamium (R.E.M Wheeler and T.V.Wheeler; 1936; pp. 153-4) dating from between c.10BC and 50AD. The sherd originates from a wheel-thrown carinated bowl of large diameter. The remaining portion of the side angles inwards slightly from the flat base. The outer face has two concentric decorative grooves a short distance up from the bottom and a further groove below. The fabric is mid grey and has grit and sand inclusions. It is likely that this was a locally made vessel. T…

The two sherds now measure 95mm by 132mm and 68mm by 105mm in size. Hollesley ware was in use from the late 13th-14th centuries.
